Game Story

Trois-Rivières, QC — The Worcester Railers improved to a 3-0 record with a midweek victory over the Trois-Rivières Lions at the Colisée Vidéotron on Wednesday, final score of 6-3.

The team took a roughly six-hour drive from Worcester on Tuesday coming off a strong opening weekend with two wins over the Adirondack Thunder. Bobby Butler, Myles McGurty, Reece Newkirk, and Steve Jandric each had multi-point nights. Bobby Butler, Noah Delmas, and Ryan MacKinnon were each plus-3. Ken Appleby had 33 saves Trois-Rivières had three power-play goals on four opportunities. It is the first time in team history the Railers have won three straight (or better) to start their season.

The Lions got on the board after dominating offensively for most of the opening ten minutes, at one point outshooting Worcester 10 to 1. Anthony Beauregard converted on a power play that had Ryan MacKinnon sitting on a delay of game for shooting the puck out of play. Beauregard ripped the puck to the top right corner past Ken Appleby to give Trois-Rivières their only lead of the night.

Railers would swing things around with Reece Newkirk tapping in a puck that was deflected upfront from a Lions’ defender to tie things up at 12:05. Steve Jandric, keeping the puck rolling from Sunday, reprised his moves skating up the right side of the ice and scoring at the crease of Lions’ goaltender Joe Vrbertic. Worcester led 2-1 through twenty minutes; shots 14-9 Trois-Rivières.

Bobby Butler extended the lead to 3-1 on a 3-on-2 rush, sending the bottom right corner from the left circle at 9:55. Railers would go shorthanded and their second goal of the night with some lack of coverage on the right side with the Lions cycling the puck in the Railers zone. Nolan Vesey gave the Railers the two-goal advantage some four minutes later, tapping in his own loose puck from Joe Vrbertic.

The Lions swapped Joe Vrbertic for Philippe Desrosiers to start the third after allowing 4 goals on fifteen shots. Bobby Butler brought the lead to 5-2 on a set-up pass from Steve Jandric on the first shot of the period. Lions found the back of the net for the third time of the night at 9:52, the puck was poked in at the crease by Lions’ center William Leblanc. Railers scored their first power-play goal of the season, with Brent Beaudoin putting the game away with his second empty-net goal of the season with 2:32 left on the game clock.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Bobby Butler (Worcester) – 2 goals, 1 assist
  2. Colin Bilek (Trois-Rivières) – 1 goal
  3. Ken Appleby (Worcester) – 33 saves, win, 0.917 SV%
