Weekend Recap

Glens Falls, NY — The Worcester Railers wrapped up a three-game road trip with a pair of wins against the Adirondack Thunder on Saturday and Sunday in Glens Falls, New York. They have won five straight and remain undefeated through the end of October, a franchise-best to kick off the 2022-23 regular season.

Saturday

Isles Prospect Henrik Tikkanen stopped 36 shots he faced. Ryan MacKinnon, Collin Adams, Blade Jenkins, and Brent Beaudoin each scored for Worcester.  Patrick Grasso and Jarrod Gourley each scored for the Adirondack Thunder; Issac Poulter stopped 22 of Worcester’s shots. Patrick Grasso scored on a shot down low for Adiondack’s first at 9:37, followed by a wrist-shot goal by Jarrod Gourley from the right circle at 10:00. Thunder

Worcester doubled their goals to four with an additional two in the second. Blade Jenkins and Brent Beaudoin scored in a three-minute gap to give Worcester their 4-2 lead after two. Adirondack outshot Worcester 14-8 in the period.

  2. Ryan MacKinnon (Worcester) – 1 goal
  3. Jarrod Gourdley (Adirondack) – 1 goal, 1 assist

Sunday

Steve Jandric had his second two-goal night of the season, Jimmy Lambert netted his first professional goal, with additional goals from Blade Jenkins, Bobby Butler, and Collin Adams. Quinn Ryan had three assists on the night. Ken Appleby stopped 25 shots for his best performance so far this season. Shots were tied at 26, Thunder and Railers split the opening frames with the shots being 10-9, both teams had 7 shots in the closing frame.

Railers continued their trend of two goals from the get-go to get things started. Blade Jenkins beat Adirondack goalie Jake Theut from the right circle for his fourth of the season at 5:01. Steve Jandric tapped in a puck eight minutes later that looked like a high-stick to extend Worcester’s lead to two. The goal was reviewed but was ruled a good goal, as high sticks are not reviewable under ECHL rules. Steve Jandric connected with Jimmy Lambert at the crease to bring the game to 3-0 at 17:37, which was Lambert’s first professional goal. Derek Osik was in the box for tripping. The goal was Worcester’s first shorthanded goal of the season. Worcester led 3-0; outshooting Adirondack 10-9 through the opening frame.

Shenanigans continued Sunday and Thunder forward Nick Corson was looking for trouble throughout the weekend and found his match with goaltender Ken Appleby, exchanging a number of punches. Appleby got a double minor for roughing, Corson a minor for Unsportsmanlike Conduct (diving) which kickstarted the interaction. Steve Jandric scored his second of the night deflecting a shot up front from Quinn Ryan to make it 4-0. Theut would soon be substituted for Issac Poulter after his fourth goal allowed on just 14 shots. Bobby Butler tapped in a loose puck to extend Worcester’s lead to 5-0. Adirondack outshot Worcester 10-9 in the second.

Brent Beaudoin with a tic-tac-toe sequence from Collin Adams on a 2-on-1 rush extended Worcester’s lead to 6-0 at 3:49 in the third. Shane Harper would kill all hopes of a perfect shutout game with a one-timer at 15:05, bringing the game to an eventual 6-1 final.

Saturday Notes

  • Railers Scratches: Connor Breen (injured), Zack Bross (injured), Blake Christensen, and Jack Quinlivan (injured).
  • Thunder Scratches: Marek Mitens (reserve), Rex Moe (injured), Jake Ryczek (injured), Xavier Parent (injured), Yanick Turcotte (suspended, serving game 2 of 5), and Shawn Weller (injured).
  • Streaks:
    • Brent Beaudoin extended his goal streak to 4 games.
    • Blade Jenkins and Nolan Vesey are on 4-game point streaks.
  • The Railers played their first game utilizing the new two-referee system which is in its pilot season. Referee Former Worcester Shark Riley Brace was one of the referees in Saturday’s game and refereed in the two-referee game in ECHL regular-season history last week. There were just three penalties called all game, Worcester was 0-for-2 and Adirondack was 0-for-1 on the power play.
  • While Worcester has been outshot in all but one of their games so far this season, it appears they are going for quality of quantity – and it appears to be working.
  • Anthony Repaci and Jacob Hayhurst were both recalled to Springfield this week on separate days. Repaci made his AHL debut Saturday night but did not make the scoresheet in Springfield’s 4-3 shootout loss to Providence. Hayhurst has been a healthy scratch in both games since being recalled. St. Louis also assigned goaltender Colten Ellis to the Tulsa Oilers after spending the first two weeks of the regular season with Springfield, but did not see any action. Springfield signed forward Braeden Guy earlier this week and has been shipped out to Orlando.
  • Sebastian Vidmar had 8 shots on goal which is a season-high for any skater playing against Worcester. Shane Harper has four assists through the first three games against Worcester this season.
