Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers completed an opening weekend sweep with a 4-1 victory against the Adirondack Thunder on Sunday afternoon.

Steve Jandric twice with Collin Adams and Brent Beaudoin each scoring in Sunday’s matchup. Isles prospect Henrik Tikkanen stopped 26 of 27 shots in his North American debut. Thunder goaltender Issac Poulter made 22 saves in his pro debut. Adirondack’s Noah Corson scored their only goal in the first period.  Worcester and Adirondack will meet fifteen more times this season.

Collin Adams put the boys in orange up with an early lead, banking the puck off a rebound from Blade Jenkins at 4:48 in the first period. Saturday night the Railers scored on their first shot, so it’s only fitting that the second (and third) shot led to their first goal Sunday. Steve Jandric slipped one past Adirondack goaltender Issac Poulter on a rush up the right side, fed up ice from Blake Christensen at 13:10 to extend the lead to two goals. Adirondack scored their lone goal of the game a minute and change later, with Noah Corson deflecting a shot from Ryan Da Silva at 14:14. Corson’s goal appeared to be scored on a high stick but the play was not reviewed. Corson’s positioning in front should’ve garnered a second look but alas, the game continued with Worcester leading 2-1 in the opening frame.

Neither team scored in the second period though it is worth noting Adirondack outshot Worcester in the period 11-8 and had two power plays, but was unable to capitalize on any of their opportunities.

Steve Jandric scored his second of the afternoon breaking through a pair of Adirondack skaters and eventually goaltender Poulter at 10:05 in the third period. Noah Corson and Myles McGurty got sent to the showers early with pairing double minor penalties for roughing at 17:43. Though the Railers fanbase was looking for that first fight of the season, they’ll have to wait a little bit longer as nothing really came after an exchange of words and a brief attempt to get some punches in after dropping the gloves. Brent Beaudoin put the game away with 35 seconds left on the game clock, tapping in a loose puck that Blade Jenkins missed just seconds prior.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Steve Jandric (Worcester) – 2 goals
  2. Henrik Tikkanen (Worcester) – 26 saves, win
  3. Collin Adams (Worcester) – 1 goal

Railers embark on a three-game road trip with a mid-week stop in Trois-Rivieres on Wednesday, followed up by two games against the Thunder in Glens Falls on Saturday and Sunday.
