Worcester, MA — The Reading Royals came back from a 4-2 deficit and beat the Worcester Railers in the second meeting between the two teams this season at the DCU Center on Friday night.

Railers alum Max Newton scored a hat trick and the game-winning goal in overtime with Charlie Gerard and Jordan Timmons scoring the other two goals for Reading. Jared Brandt, Billy Jerry, Zack Bross, and Nolan Vesey all scored goals for the Railers. This was the first goal of the season for both Jerry and Bross, while Brandt ended a 12-game scoring drought with his fourth goal of the season. Henrik Tikkanen appeared in net for the third consecutive game and made 32 saves. Reading’s Nolan Maier, who recently rejoined the team on loan from Lehigh Valley, earned his seventh straight ECHL win by making 20 saves against Worcester.

Reading’s Charlie Gerard scored the only goal of the opening period, fed from a pass into the Railers zone by Max Newton, beat Henrik Tikkanen at 8:06. Railers outshot Reading 9-6 in the period.

Jared Brandt scored on a one-timer from the blue line to tie things up at 8:50 in the second period. Billy Jerry tapped in Myles McGurty’s shot 1:48 later to give Worcester the 2-1 lead halfway through the second period. Max Newton tapped in a rebound from Garrett McFadden on the power play at 13:20 to tie the game back up heading into the third period.

Railers scored back-to-back powerplays in the third period. Zack Bross netted a rebound off the pad of Nolan Maier with 12 seconds left on Worcester’s sixth power play. Nolan Vesey brought Worcester’s lead to 4-2, shooting the puck under the pads of Nolan Maier with 2:25 left in the third period. Nolan Maier would be pulled for the extra skater after Worcester’s fourth goal. On a rush towards the net, Trey Bradley beat Henrik Tikkanen at the crease to make it a one point game with 1:41 left in the period. Jordan Timmons scored with 8.5 seconds, successfully completing a comeback for the Royals which sent this game into overtime.

With the Royals scored twice in the closing 1:47 of the third period to force overtime, Max Newton scored at 3:12 in the overtime period to secure Reading’s second win over Worcester this season.

Trois-Rivières Lions beat the Newfoundland Growlers 5-3 earlier in the day and the Maine Mariners beat the Adirondack Thunder for the North Division’s other games on Friday. The Railers are currently one point behind the first-place Growlers but remain one point ahead of the third-place Royals. Every team in the division, except for the Maine Mariners, will be playing on Saturday night.

With Friday’s game in the books, the Railers and Royals will travel to Reading, Pennsylvania where they’ll continue their division battle scheduled for 7 PM on Saturday.
