Game Story

Portland, ME — The Worcester Railers kicked off the New Year wrapping up a 3-in-3 weekend against the Maine Mariners at the Cross Insurance Arena on Sunday.

After blowing a two-point lead, the Railers bounced back in the third period, forcing overtime. Blade Jenkins netted the eventual game-winner with the only goal in the shootout in the fourth round. Henrik Tikkanen made 33 stops Sunday, while Trevor Gorsuch stopped 39. Both goaltenders were in the net for all 67 minutes plus the shootout rounds. Blake Christensen and Nolan Vesey were the goal scorers for Worcester. Tim Doherty, Alex Kile, Alex-Olivier Voyer were the putters for the Mariners.

Blake Christensen scored on a quick shot set-up by Quinn Ryan from the left circle at 2:38 to give Worcester the lead and the only scoring in the first period.

Nolan Vesey doubled the Railers’ lead at 6:33 in the second period with Anthony Repaci sitting in the sin bin for holding eight seconds prior. Maine got on the board at 16:23 with Tim Doherty finding the back of the net past a crowded Railers net. Railers held the edge 2-1 through forty minutes, outshooting Maine 15-9 in the frame.

Maine would go on to score twice in the second period, briefly giving them a 3-2 lead. Alex Kile scored on a one-timer from the left circle on a circle-to-circle pass from Mathew Santos to tie the game up at 3:02. Alex-Olivier Voyer beat Henrik Tikkanen from the slot at 5:22 for their third goal of the night. Blake Christensen and Connor Doherty fought in-between Maine’s third-period goals, with Doherty taking down Christensen with the height advantage. Railers called their timeout after Maine’s third goal and things quickly turned around as Nolan Vesey notched his second of the night, tying the game at 3 each at 8:04.

The game headed to a shootout after an anxiety-filled overtime period. Maine outshot Worcester 6-5 in the period. Blake Christensen, Bobby Butler, and Reece Newkirk were unsuccessful in their shootout attempts while Cam Askew, Alex Kile, Mitch Fossier, and Tim Doherty were also unsuccessful for Maine. Blade Jenkins beat Trevor Gorsuch pad-side to bring home the victory for Worcester in the fourth round.

The three stars of Sunday’s game were:

  1. Nolan Vesey (Worcester) – 2 goals
  2. Blade Jenkins (Worcester) – 1 assist, shootout goal
  3. Mitch Fossier (Maine) – 2 assists
