Game Story

Reading, PA — The Reading Royals and Worcester Railers met for the second game of a two-game weekend series at the Santander Arena on Saturday night.

Following Friday’s 5-4 loss in overtime in Worcester, the teams met 24 hours later down in Reading for the second match-up. Both Henrik Tikkanen and Nolan Maier were in goal for the game, with Maier earning his eighth consecutive ECHL win and Tikkanen making his fourth straight start for Worcester. Maier made 28 saves, while Tikkanen made 32 saves in the net. Brent Beaudoin scored Worcester’s lone goal in the third period after Reading scored once in the closing minutes of the second period and the opening minutes of the third. It was the third loss for the Railers in three games against the Royals this season.

Neither team scored in the first period with Henrik Tikkanen and Nolan Maier both stopping all nine shots by their opposing teams. Worcester had the only power play of the game which came at 15:30 in the first period, with Shane Sellar sitting on a hooking call. Railers failed to score on that power play, with Nolan Vesey getting the single shot on the net as the power play expired.

Tyler Kirkup broke the tie with a two-on-one rush with Alec Butcher into the Railers zone, beating newly signed Jake Schultz and Henrik Tikkanen with a top-shelf goal at 18:05. Railers trailed 1-0 and were outshot 16-12 in the middle frame.

Shane Sellar brought the Royals to 2-0 at 3:12 on a wrist shot from the left circle, which bounced down off the cross bar and into the net behind Henrik Tikkanen. Brent Beaudoin scored the Railers’ only goal of the game at 5:23 of the third period. The goal was scored in a tic-tac-toe sequence with Beaudoin beating Nolan Maier, who was out of position. Christian Evers fought Brendan Hoffman at 15:28 in the third period after Hoffman knocked Bobby Butler down during a scramble for the puck in the Royals zone. Evers was quickly taken down by Hoffman and both were sent to their locker rooms for early showers. For Evers, that was his first professional fight, and was given an additional game misconduct for Instigating in the final five minutes.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Shane Sellar (Reading) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  2. Alec Butcher (Reading) – 2 assists
  3. Garrett McFadden (Reading) – 1 assist

With their loss on Saturday, the Railers drop to third in the division, one point back from Reading and three points back from the first-place Newfoundland Growlers. Newfoundland beat the Trois-Rivieres Lions 7-3 on Saturday and the Adirondack Thunder beat the Norfolk Admirals. Adirondack, Norfolk, Newfoundland, and Trois-Rivieres will all play on Sunday.

The Railers road stand continues on Wednesday for the first of three meetings against the Growlers at St. John’s, Newfoundland at 5:30 p.m. EST.
