Game Story

Trois-Rivieres, QC — It was a big night for the Worcester Railers on Friday night, defeating the Trois-Rivieres Lions 6-2 in the first of back-to-back games this weekend.

In his tenth start of the season, John Muse secured his seventh victory with 34 saves. Meanwhile, Zachary Émond made his second consecutive start for Trois-Rivières, recording 29 saves. The Railers capitalized on two power-play goals, a shorthanded goal, and an empty-netter. Blade Jenkins notched a hat trick, with Jake Pivonka, Reece Newkirk, and Ashton Calder also finding the back of the net. Alex-Olivier Voyer scored both goals for the Lions, and Christian Krygier contributed with an assist in his first game since November 7th. Pivonka, Jenkins, and Newkirk each had multi-point performances.

Blade Jenkins’ hat trick marked the Railers’ first of the season and is a strong contender for his best performance so far. This achievement added to his six multi-point games this season, three of which occurred in his last six games. With the hat trick, Jenkins extended his point streak to six games, amassing ten points in that span, and he has scored goals in his last three consecutive games.

Despite two power plays in the first period, the Railers found themselves down 1-0 after Alex-Olivier Voyer scored on a rebound at 12:11 in the period with the Railers outshooting the Lions 13-10 in the period.

The Railers turned things around with three goals in a two-minute and seven-second span. While killing off a penalty to Brendan Robbins, Blade Jenkins scored on a breakaway to tie the game at 5:36. Jake Pivonka made it 2-1 a minute and six seconds later on a feed from Todd Goehring from the left circle. A minute and one second after Pivonka’s goal, Reece Newkirk scored shortly after a face-off with a bar-down goal from the blue line. Alex-Olivier Voyer broke up the momentum for a bit, scoring his second of the game while Railers skaters were doing everything but covering him at 9:26 in the second.

Blade Jenkins scored with a snipe from the left circle at 4:36 on the Railers third power play of the night. They’d score again on their fourth power play with Jake Pivonka scoring from the right circle at 10:14. After a couple of scoring chances on an empty net late in the game, which included a longshot from John Muse, Blade Jenkins completed his hat trick with a shot from the Railers blue line at 18:57 in the third period.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Blade Jenkins (Worcester) – 3 goals
  2. Reece Newkirk (Worcester) – 1 goal, 2 assist
  3. Alex-Olivier Voyer (Trois-Rivieres) – 2 goals

On Friday night, the Newfoundland Growlers suffered a 5-3 defeat against the Indy Fuel. The Adirondack Thunder secured a 4-3 overtime victory over the Reading Royals. The Maine Mariners, playing at home, faced a 5-0 shutout against the Rapid City Rush. In a thrilling shootout, the Norfolk Admirals clinched a 4-3 win over the Toledo Walleye, extending their lead to five points over Worcester for the second spot in the division. The Railers maintain their third-place position in the division, having played two fewer games than the Newfoundland Growlers; both teams have accumulated 43 points.

The Railers and Lions play again on Saturday for a 3 p.m. matinee at the Colisée Vidéotron.
