Game Story

Reading, PA — The Worcester Railers beat the Reading Royals 4-3 Tuesday morning in front of a packed Santander Arena.

Henrik Tikkanen made a career-best 49 saves against the Royals on Tuesday. Brent Beaudoin, Jimmy Lambert, Billy Jerry, and Andrei Bakanov were the goal scorers for Worcester. Jimmy Lambert had a goal and and two assists, leading the team to victory with back-to-back multi-point games. Pat Nagle made 19 saves in what is only his second career start against Worcester, though he’s been in the league for several years his only other start came on Halloween night for the Toledo Walleye back in 2017. Brendan Hoffman scored first for Reading followed by a pair power play goals from Dominic Cormier in the third period.

Brendan Hoffman put the Royals on the board at 4:40 in the first period. Hoffman collected the puck left behind by former Railer Devon Paliani and wrapped the puck around the goal post for the early lead. The Royal’s lead would be cut short as the Railers would respond less than three minutes later. On the power play, Anthony Repaci sent a shot through traffic, eventually making its way up front and redirecting off the skate of Brent Beaudoin to tie the game at a goal a piece. Railers would be outshot 13-4, with three of the four shots being credited to Andrei Bakanov early on in the period.

Momentum would continue in the Railers favor into the second period, with Jimmy Lambert notching his tenth goal of the season on a shorthanded rush at 3:48. Lambert’s goal should be credited as a shorthanded goal, Christian Evers and Connor McCarthy were behind the play and were off for a line change with Myles McGurty and Conor Breen at the time of the goal. The scoresheet lists Artur Terchiyev as being on the ice as well, but is seen on the bench during the goal celebration. Billy Jerry extended the Railers lead to 3-1 on a one-timer from Nick Fea with under a minute left in the second period. With the Railers lead, they were outshot 29-15 after two periods.

After leading the Railers in shots the entire game, Andrei Bakanov finally found the back of the net for his first professional goal in North America. Bakanov was fed a one-timer from Jimmy Lambert at the 47-second mark of the third period. Dominic Cormier bounced back with a pair of power play goals to bring the Royals back to within one, but came short of tying the game up. Cormier’s first goal came just under three minutes after Bakanov’s first goal, his second came at 15:19 on a wrist-shot. The Royals had 23 shots in the third period, making their tally 52 shots to Worcester’s 23 for the entire game, a season-high for an opponent so far this season.

The three stars of Tuesday morning’s game were:

  1. Jimmy Lambert (Worcester) – 1 goal, 2 assists
  2. Dominic Cormier (Reading) – 2 goals
  3. Jacob Gaucher (Reading) – 2 assists

The Railers and Royals game was one of two games around the league on Tuesday. Wichita and Kansas City has a match scheduled for later in the night. Newfoundland hosts Adirondack Wednesday, while Reading begins a road trip Wednesday facing the Norfolk Admirals.

The Railers host the Royals on Friday and Saturday with a 7:05 puck drop.
