Game Story

Portland, ME — The Worcester Railers lost their third straight game on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Maine Mariners 9-3 at the Cross Insurance Arena.

Andrei Bakanov, Artur Terchiyev, and Brent Moran all made their debuts with the Railers on Wednesday. This was also the first time that Bakanov and Terchiyev had played in the ECHL, with Bakanov being assigned to Worcester on Wednesday morning and Terchiyev being signed to a contract after spending most of the season with the Birmingham Bulls of the SPHL. Henrik Tikkanen stopped 29 of 35 shots and was replaced by Brent Moran after the sixth Mariners goal. Moran made 11 saves in his relief effort. Reece Newkirk and Anthony Repaci scored Worcester’s two goals while Alex-Olivier Voyer and Tim Doherty each had hat tricks, supplemented by two goals from Cam Askew and a goal from Mitch Fossier in the first meeting between the two teams this season.

Railers and Mariners were tied through the opening period with Reece Newkirk picking up the puck on a one-timer from the right circle at 2:35. Mariners’ would even things up three minutes later, beating Henrik Tikkanen on a rebound. The game was tied at one through the opening twenty minutes with Maine outshooting Worcester 17-10.

Anthony Repaci regained Worcester’s lead one another one-timer from the right circle, converting for Worcester’s first power-play goal of the afternoon at 3:24 in the second period. Cam Askew responded with his second of the game from the blue line at 7:07. The momentum for Maine never really stopped from there on out, and Alex-Olivier Voyer scored on a rebound at 10:44 for Maine’s first lead of the day. Voyer would score again 39 seconds later to double their lead at 11:23. Tim Doherty would continue the trend of scoring in doubles with goals at 13:14 and 16:51. Brent Moran would make his first appearance this season, replacing Henrik Tikkanen after the Mariners’ sixth goal. The Mariners led 6-2 at the end of the second period, with Maine doubling up on Worcester’s shots, outshooting 18-9 in the stanza with a four-goal lead.

Voyer and Doherty completed their hat tricks in the third period with the Mariners not looking back. Voyer scored at the 48-second mark and Doherty scored on an open net, with a wrap around the post as Moran failed to recover the puck from behind his net, bringing the Mariners’ lead to 8-2. Quinn Ryan broke the Mariners’ goal streak at 5:43 with Nick Issacson serving a five-minute major for boarding Myles McGurty. McGurty, who was helped off the ice by Railers trainer Alex Maring, did not return to the game while at this point in the game the Railers were not making any comeback. Mitch Fossier scored at 14:23 to give the Mariners the 9-3 victory.

The three stars of Wednesday afternoon’s game were:

  1. Alex-Olivier Voyer (Maine) – 3 goals, 1 assist
  2. Tim Doherty (Maine) – 3 goals, 1 assist
  3. Mitchell Fossier (Maine) – 1 goal, 2 assists

The Railers will pick up the pieces from this effort and continue their road trip on Friday against the Adirondack Thunder. The puck drop for that match is slated for 7:00 p.m.
