Glens Falls, NY — The Worcester Railers Kicked-off their New Years’ 3-in-3 weekend against the Adirondack Thunder on Friday night at the Cool Insuring Arena.

Brent Moran made his first ECHL start and recorded 34 saves on 37 shots. Meanwhile, Adirondack Thunder goaltender Jake Theut made 35 saves on 38 shots. For the Railers, Bobby Butler, Blake Christensen, and Anthony Repaci each scored a goal. The Thunder’s offense was led by Xavier Parent who scored two goals in the opening period, along with goals by Ryan Smith and Ryan Da Silva for the Thunder’s second win over the Railers this season.

Xavier Parent gave the Thunder the early lead with two goals in the first period. The first came on a tip-in set-up by a shot from Ryan Orgel at 9:48. His second, came on an odd-man rush at 14:42.

Ryan Smith extended the Thunder lead to 3-0 at the 14-minute mark with a 4-on-3 power play, deflecting a pass from Jeff Taylor at the front of the Railers net. The Railers answered back by scoring back-to-back goals in the second period. Bobby Butler broke a Railers’ scoring drought at the Cool Insuring Arena, scoring top-shelf 22 seconds later. Blake Christensen converted on the power play with under a minute left in the second period to bring the Railers to within one heading into the third period.

Brent Beaudoin scored on an open net with 2:34 left in the third period, which would have tied the game, but the goal was initially waved off due to goaltender interference. The play was reviewed and referees Riley Brace and Alex Normandin confirmed the no-goal call. Jake Theutwas out of his net when the puck was shot in and was tangled up with Railers forward Reece Newkirk on the left side of the Thunder net.

Ryan Da Silva scored on a long shot from the Adirondack zone into the empty net, just after Brent Moran was pulled for an extra attacker, giving the Thunder a 4-2 lead. Anthony Repaci scored on the power play with 34 seconds left in the third period to bring the Railers back to within one but was ultimately not enough as the Railers were unable to get the puck back into the Adirondack zone as the game clock ran out, and the Railers fell short of a comeback, losing the game 4-3. Both teams had 38 shots on goal following the sixty minutes of play.

The three stars of Friday night’s game were:

  3. Bobby Butler (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist

In the ECHL north division, the Newfoundland Growlers ended a three-game losing streak and regained full control of first place in the ECHL North Division with a 4-3 overtime victory against the Kalamazoo Wings. Meanwhile, the Norfolk Admirals lost their 23rd game of the season, 4-3, against the Atlanta Gladiators. The Maine Mariners defeated the Trois-Rivieres Lions 5-2 in Portland, and the Reading Royals earned two points with a win over the Wheeling Nailers, putting them within two points of Worcester’s second-place position in the division.

The 3-in-3 weekend continues Saturday night as the Railers host the Maine Mariners for the first time this season on New Year’s Eve. Puck drop for Saturday night is slated for a special start time of 5:05 p.m.

  • Worcester Railers announced the signing of defenseman Jake Schultz on Friday afternoon and made his debut during Friday’s game. Schultz has 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) and 57 penalty minutes in 17 games with the Binghamton Black Bears of the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) this season. In his career, Schultz has faced the Railers once, when he played for the Wheeling Nailers on February 9, 2019. During that game, Schultz fought Yanick Turcotte at 5:41 in the first period.
  • The Thunder were without Sebastian Vidmar and Ivan Chukarov (PTO) as both were recalled to the Utica Comets on Friday. The Thunder signed defenseman Ryan Orgel from the Pensacola Ice Flyers of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). Orgel has 14 points (2 goals, 12 assists) in 20 games this season. They dressed the league minimum of 16 skaters Friday.
  • Following Friday night’s game, the Railers had the following streaks:
