Exeter, NH — Railers picked up a win in the their only pre-season match of the 2018-19 season on Saturday Night.

Josh Holmstrom put the Railers on the board mid-way through the first period, making a solid block on Mariners’ Goaltender Brandon Halverson, and scoring on the empty net. Barry Almeida would extend the lead to two forty-two seconds later, off a bounced shot from Tyler Barnes.

Almeida scored his second of the night on pass across the crease and tapped in on the power play.

Nick Sorkin put up the fourth goal for the Railers with a two man advantage with under five minutes left in the game, and Trent Durocher put up a fifth with under three left in the game.

Evan Buitenhuis made a perfect 20 saves on 20 shots in the first two periods for the Railers. Brandon Halverson made 25 saves on 28 shots for the Mariners. Charlie Millen and Connor Lacouvee replaced Buitenhuis and Halverson, respectively.

Saturday’s game had two franchise firsts, with the Railers winning their first-ever preseason game and their first ever shutout in a preseason game. They are now 1-2 all-time in preseason games.

Next Up: The Railers begin their season on the road with back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday against the Reading Royals, October 13 and 14.

  • Barry Almeida and Josh Holmstrom wore the Alternate Captain A’s for the Railers. Mike Cornell, who did not play on Saturday, will be the Captain heading into the Railers second season.
  • The Bridgeport Sound Tigers, AHL affiliate of the Railers, started their regular season tonight. While Jeff Kubiak, Matthew Gaudreau (inj), and Yanick Turcotte are still up there, they were all scratches for the game.
  • Connor Doherty and Woody Hudson are the only two players to play on all three Railers preseason games to date.
