Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers blew a 4-1 lead to the Maine Mariners on Friday night, dropping the first of two games against Maine this weekend.

John Muse made his twelfth start of the season, making 19 saves on 24 shots. Kyle Keyser made his first start against the Railers, making 34 saves for his third win of the season. Jake Pivonka, Ashton Calder, Anthony Callin, and Riley Piercey each scored for Worcester. Wyllum Deveaux scored twice for Maine, complimented by goals from Alex Kile and William Provost, Ryan Mast scored their game-winner at the 3:08 mark of overtime. Blade Jenkins’ four-game goal streak came to an end on Friday, but his point streak continues on with an assist on Anthony Callin’s goal. Jake Pivonka and Ashton Calder each had a goal and two assists.

Finding a way to lose a 4-1 lead and losing in overtime may be a Railers’ textbook loss, and with a tight race for the playoffs, every point counts. Despite a missed too many men call and a missed goalie interference call on a Maine goal, the Railers were still in control of the outcome of this game.

Jake Pivonka put the Railers on the board at 11:23, sending a one-timer from Ashton Calder under the crossbar from out in front. Jeff Solow drew blood on Todd Goehring, resulting in a 4-minute power play at 14:25. During this advantage, Adam Mechura seized control of a loose puck, initiating a breakaway. He faced off against John Muse, who made the initial stop, but Alex Kile pounced on the rebound to equalize the game at 15:56. Just over a minute later, still on the power play, Ashton Calder reclaimed the lead for the Railers by capitalizing on Jake Pivonka’s rebound.

At 12:28 in the second period, Anthony Callin increased the score to 3-1, netting a goal through a precise tic-tac-toe play with Blade Jenkins and Christian Krygier.

At the 59-second mark of the third period, Riley Piercey extended the lead to 4-1, maneuvering past Kyle Keyser as the puck trickled toward the goal line. Maine capitalized on a controversial goal at 7:06 in the period, as John Muse was knocked to the ice and despite a video review, the referees confirmed it as a valid goal. Wyllum Deveaux narrowed the gap with a breakaway goal at 15:39, bringing Maine within one. Deveaux struck again three minutes later, capitalizing on an empty net with Keyser pulled for an extra attacker, shortly after Artyom Kulakov lost possession in Maine’s zone. During the sequence that led to the tying goal, Maine had seven players on the ice, but the referees missed the too many men infraction.

With the game heading to overtime, Maine once again had a couple of breakaway chances, and Ryan Mast scored on his rebound at 3:08 to end the game.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Ryan Mast (Maine) – game-winning goal
  2. Ashton Calder (Worcester) – 1 goal, 2 assists
  3. Wyllum Deveaux (Worcester) – 2 goals

Around the division, the Newfoundland Growlers beat the Greenville Swamp Rabbits 6-2 earlier in the night. The Norfolk Admirals beat the Trois-Rivieres Lions 6-3 at the Norfolk Scope. The Reading Royals fell 2-1 to the Wheeling Nailers in overtime. The Adirondack Thunder lost 4-1 to the Florida Everblades in the first game of their southern road trip. The Railers remain in fourth in points with 46 points and third in point percentage with .523 as of Friday night, Maine is not far behind with 43 points and a .500 point percentage.

The Railers close out the weekend on Saturday night, hosting Maine again for Pink in the Rink night. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Notes

  • Worcester scratches: Andrei Bakanov, John Copeland, Tristan Lennox, Zach White, and Zsombor Garat.
  • Maine scratches: Andrew Peski, Austin Albrecht, Brad Arvanitis, Connor Doherty, Curtis Hall, François Brassard, Jimmy Lambert, and Owen Pederson.
  • No announcement was ever made for Zach White’s game misconduct in the Railers’ last game at the DCU Center two weeks ago. While the argument could’ve been made that Zach White wasn’t aware of who he was hitting at the time of the penalty, he still did not play in those three games he would’ve been suspended for, making a suspension moot.
  • Reece Newkirk was once again recalled to Bridgeport on Monday, and was a healthy scratch on Friday night. Ken Appleby also had Friday night off with Henrik Tikkanen backing up Jakub Skarek.
  • Following Friday night’s game, the Railers had the following scoring streaks and droughts:
    • Ryan Verrier is without a point in his last three games.
    • Christian Krygier is on a three-game point streak. (1-4-5)
    • Keeghan Howdeshell is without a point in his last three games.
    • Blade Jenkins extended his point streak to eight games. (11-5-16)
    • Ryan Dickinson is without a point in his last seven games.
    • Riley Piercey snapped a four-game scoring drought with a goal and an assist.
