Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers dropped their fourth Sunday home game of the season, falling to the Trois-Rivieres Lions 4-2.

Ken Appleby made his second start of the weekend, making 31 saves for his first loss of the season. Zachary Émond was the goaltender for Trois-Rivieres, making 36 saves and earning him the game’s first star. Jack Quinlivan and Blade Jenkins both scored for Worcester. Quinlivan’s goal was his first of the season, and Jenkins’ goal was his fourteenth and extended his point streak to four games. Nolan Yaremko, Nicolas Guay, Jakov Novak, and Cedric Montminy scored for Trois-Rivieres. Sunday’s attendance was 3,143, which is higher than anticipated with an impending snowstorm and playoff football going on at the same time as this game.

Trois-Rivieres scored first, Nolan Yaremko got a quick shot over the left shoulder of Ken Appleby for the only score of the first period. The Railers are 6-16-1-2 when the opponent scores first, and 5-15-0-1 when trailing after one period.

Jack Quinlivan evened things up at 7:12 of the second period with the period’s only goal. Quinlivan made the initial shot which bounced off the pads of Zachary Émond, he shot the loose puck after the Lions failed to gain control of the puck and got it into the net behind Émond.

In the closing seconds of the second period, Alex-Olivier Voyer cross-checked Trevor Cosgrove into the boards leading to a fight between Artyom Kulakov and Cedric Montimny dropping the gloves and Zach White going after Alex-Olivier Voyer. Kulakov held his own after Montminy took him down, the fight continued as Kulakov brought Montminy down. White attempted to fight Voyer, and Voyer proceeded to pull White’s jersey over his head. As linesman Shane Kanaly broke up the fight between White and Voyer, White blindly punched Kanaly, earning him a game misconduct. A total of 37 penalty minutes were issued during this event, with Alex-Olivier Voyer getting seventeen of those minutes with a game-misconduct, major, and minor penalty for cross-checking.

It would be 4-on-4 after all the penalties were handed out, and at six seconds into the third period, Blade Jenkins would earn himself an interference penalty, leading to a Lions’ power play. Nicolas Guay would score at 1:31 in the third period, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead. Blade Jenkins tied the game 3:20 later, wrapping a pass around the back of the net to get past Émond. Six minutes later, Jakov Novak slapped a loose puck into the Railers net to regain the lead. With 1:34 left in the game and Ken Appleby pulled for the extra attacker, Cedric Montminy would race past Trevor Cosgrove, Andrei Bakanov, and Anthony Callin, where he skated the puck into the empty net to seal the 4-2 game.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Zachary Émond (Trois-Rivieres) – 36 saves, win, 0.947 SV&
  2. Jakov Novak (Trois-Rivieres) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Jack Quinlivan (Worcester) – 1 goal

Each team is at .500 on the year, with Maine at 39 points and games played, Worcester at 41, and Newfoundland at 43. Also on Sunday, the Norfolk Admirals beat the Adirondack Thunder, in Glens Falls, 5-4 in the shootout to snap the Thunder’s 11-game win streak, but their point streak continues with a point in the shootout.
