Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers dropped the second game of a 3-in-3 weekend, 6-3 to the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday night.

John Muse made his ninth start for Worcester, stopping 22 of 27 shots by Norfolk. It was the most goals allowed in a game by Muse so far this season. Kristian Stead played all 60 minutes for Norfolk, getting lucky on a few misses from Worcester skaters, he also made a couple of great highlight saves. Blade Jenkins scored both of Worcester’s goals, while Karmerin Nault, Stepan Timofeyev, Aaron Miller, Carson Musser, Danny Katic, and Andrew McLean scored Norfolk’s six goals.

The announced attendance for this game was 5,720 and was announced as a “sell-out” by the team, despite there being thousands of seats at the DCU Center that weren’t sold or hidden behind curtains that were never opened up. Most of the lower bowl and the first couple of rows of the upper bowl that aren’t covered by the curtains were sold. They sold out of tickets that were made available for sale.

Just like many games this season, Norfolk scored first at 1:14 in the first period. With Anthony Callin the box on a hooking call, Karmerin Nault converted on Norfolk’s power play, scoring glove side on a feed from Brady Fleurent. Stepan Timofeyev scored on a weird bounce on a shot from Brady Fleurent that went over the shoulder of John Muse at 4:59. Blade Jenkins got the Railers on the board at 10:39, tipping in a shot from Ryan Verrier that came from the blueline.

Aaron Miller extended Norfolk’s dominance, finding the net at 3:13 in the second period following a turnover from Worcester. The play unfolded with an up-ice pass from Connor Fedorek after he capitalized on the turnover. Miller skillfully maneuvered along the boards, eluding Connor Welsh and progressing past Anthony Repaci. He then skated across the crease and scored on the backhand to surpass John Muse. Later in the period, at 11:41 on the power play, Danny Katic set up Carson Musser with a pass from the left circle, and Musser went one-on-one with Muse, finding the top shelf for Norfolk’s fourth goal. Blade Jenkins capitalized on a turnover in the Admirals zone, stealing the puck and scoring his second goal of the game at 13:12 in the second period.

Heading into the third period, the Railers faced being outplayed in the first two, yet they were only trailing by two – down, but not completely out. A potential comeback could have been in the cards if Norfolk’s lead had been kept to just two goals, but Worcester had no intentions of allowing that to happen, especially with Norfolk controlling the puck for the majority of the initial ten minutes of play. Danny Katic extended the lead to 5-2 with a shot that slipped under the pads of Muse at 5:17. John Muse was pulled for the extra attacker with five minutes remaining in the third period, and a minute and eleven seconds later, Andrew McLean scored on the empty net, widening the gap to 6-2.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Kristian Stead (Norfolk) – 34 saves, win, 0.944 SV%
  2. Danny Katic (Norfolk) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Blade Jenkins (Worcester) – 2 goals

Every team in the ECHL played Saturday night and no favors were had in the North Division. Earlier in the night, the Newfoundland Growlers topped the Maine Mariners 5-1 in Portland. Over in Glens Falls, the Trois-Rivieres Lions defeated the Adirondack Thunder 2-1 in overtime. In Reading, the Royals suffered another disastrous loss to the Wheeling Nailers, 8-2. The Railers have lost some ground, with the Admirals regaining second place, and the Growlers are neck-and-neck with Worcester for third. Every north division team is playing on Sunday, except Reading.

The 3-in-3 weekend concludes on Sunday at 3 p.m.
