Game Story

Tulsa, OK — The Worcester Railers faced the Tulsa Oilers in their final regular season game against a Western Conference team on Sunday.

Mitch Gillam had the start for Worcester but was replaced after allowing five goals on ten shots. Nick Sorkin and Mike Cornell were ejected in the second period with game misconducts. Worcester goals were scored by Ryan MacKinnon (5th), Barry Almeida (15th), Ivan Kosorenkov (9th).

Railers had the early lead with a goal by Ryan MacKinnon on the game’s first power play at 3:15 in the first period. Things would quickly go south for Worcester, turning into one of the worst periods in the team’s history. Tulsa scored a total of five unanswered goals in the period, resulting in the team using their timeout after the fourth goal at 7:02 and a goaltending swap at 13:53 after the fifth goal. Tulsa led 5-1, doubling Worcester’s shots 16-8.

Ryan MacKinnon picked up his first fighting major at 11:44 against Alex Kromm in what ended up being a quick, even scrap. Two minutes later, Yanick Turcotte fought against Mike McKee in a rematch from last night which was all Turcotte and would’ve been more had the linesmen let the two finish their fight.

Tulsa’s Adam Pleskatch scored his league-leading 27th goal of the season, fifteen seconds into a power play that had Mike Cornell sitting for roughing at the beginning of the period. Barry Almeida broke Tulsa’s six-goal streak at 6:50 on the breakaway. Showing a little more promise, the Railers trailed 6-2 after two periods.

Frustrations would get the best of Worcester in the second half of the second period with Nick Sorkin getting a game misconduct after trying to fight with Charlie Sampair shortly after both players exited the box for matching roughing penalties. Sorkin lost his cool when Sampair wouldn’t drop the gloves and was quickly escorted to the locker room. Mike Cornell would soon join him after receiving a cross-checking major and a game misconduct two minutes later.

Railers added a goal on the power play with Ivan Kosorenkov scoring at the crease. Ryan Hitchcock and Tyler Barnes both had assists on the goal, extending both of their point streaks.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Tommy Mele (Tulsa) – 2 goals
  2. Jared Thomas (Tulsa) – 1 goal, 1 assist, +3
  3. Chris Forney (Tulsa) – 2 assists, +3

Worcester Railers (23-21-5-3) are still within two points of fourth place in the division as Manchester lost to Orlando earlier in the day. Reading and Maine both trail behind Worcester by a single point.

The Railers return to North Division action this week, taking the Manchester Monarchs for some mid-week action on Wednesday at 7 PM.
