Game Story

Trois-Rivieres, QC — The Worcester Railers picked up two points after a three-goal second period put them up 4-3 over the Trois-Rivieres Lions on Friday night.

John Muse earned his thirteenth win of the season in his 21st start for the Railers, he stopped 26 shots on the night. Zachary Émond made the start for the Lions and was pulled after allowing four goals on fifteen shots. Joe Vrbetic made a relief appearance stopping all nine shots by Worcester after coming into the game. It is the third time this season and the second time in a week that Émond has been pulled and replaced with Vrbetic, Vrbetic has yet to allow a goal in any of those relief appearances this season. Jake Pivonka, Artyom Kulakov, Andrei Bakanov, and Anthony Callin each tallied a goal for Worcester. Carson MacKinnon and Jake Goldowski each had assists for their first points as Railers. Brycen Martin, John Parker-Jones, and Nicolas Guay scored for the Lions. Despite some roughing after the buzzer, there were just three penalties called during the game. It was a good special teams game for the Railers, converting on their only power play and successfully killing off their two infractions. A combined 24 minutes of penalties were added at the 20-minute mark of the third period.

The Railers scored first on their only power play at 8:26 in the first period. Jake Pivonka nailed a slapshot off the crossbar on the Railers’ only power play of the night for the initial lead. A minute and forty-four seconds later, Brycen Martin skated in and sent the puck five-hole to tie the game back up at 10:10 heading into the second period.

The Lions took the lead in the second period when John Parker-Jones skated down the right wing on an odd-man rush. He placed a perfect shot over Muse’s right shoulder, making it 2-1 Trois-Rivières at 3:27. Artyom Kulakov kicked off a flurry of goals, scoring on a drop-pass from Carson MacKinnon from the right circle at 8:35. Andrei Bakanov tapped in a loose puck 71 seconds later to regain the lead and tucked it in behind Zachary Émond. Anthony Callin scored the third goal in 1:55 on a one-timer from Ashton Calder from the slot at 10:30, bringing the game to 4-2. After Callin’s goal, Joe Vrbetic replaced Émond in the net for the Lions. The Lions would get some spark as just 45 seconds later, Nicolas Guay scored with John Muse out of his net to close out scoring for the second period, and would eventually be the final tally of the game.

Worcester would have just three shots on goal in the third period compared to Trois-Rivieres’ 13, and the Railers would have a crucial penalty kill as Christian Krygier went off on a tripping call. It was a gritty third period, as the referees continued to let the game go after Trevor Cosgrove received a hard hit that went unpenalized, and later in the period the Lions’ Miguël Tourigny left the game after taking a puck off the face. Not long after the whistle, gloves and sticks would cover the ice with several players needing to be broken up and sent off the ice with 24 penalty minutes being on after the game.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Anthony Callin (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  2. Brycen Martin (Trois-Rivieres) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. John Parker-Jones (Trois-Rivieres) – 1 goal, 1 assist. +2

Worcester is just three points back from the Newfoundland Growlers for third place, Railers have two games in hand. The Reading Royals beat the Norfolk Admirals 5-4 in overtime earlier in the night, Reading is still three points back from Worcester and Norfolk is unreachable with 71 points. The Maine Mariners shut out the Adirondack Thunder 7-0 thanks to a hat-trick to Curtis Hall, Maine is still four points back behind Worcester. Railers fans will be looking for an Idaho Steelheads win against the Growlers tonight along with a Railers win as the playoff push continues on Saturday.

Railers and Lions are playing again on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Notes

  • Worcester scratches: Anthony Repaci, John Copeland, Riley Piercey, Ryan Verrier, Todd Goehring, and Tristan Lennox.
  • Trois-Rivières scratches: Charles-Antoine Paiement, Kyle Keyser, Markuss Komuls, Mason Kohn, Matthew Boucher, Ryan Mast, Shane Starrett, Tyler Drevitch, and Zachary Bouthillier.
  • Reece Newkirk was recalled after Tuesday morning’s game against Maine. Newkirk was a healthy scratch on Friday and with Lou Lamorillo making no moves at the NHL Trade Deadline, it seems like another move that hurts Worcester and does nothing for the development of Newkirk. Bridgeport plays at home on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Following Friday night’s game, the Railers had the following scoring streaks and droughts:
    • Christian Krygier snapped a three-game scoring drought with an assist.
    • Joey Cipollone is without a point in his last three games.
    • Jake Pivonka is on a three-game point streak. (2-2-4)
    • Keeghan Howdeshell is without a point in his last seven games.
    • Carson MacKinnon snapped an eight-game scoring drought with an assist. Three of those games were with Worcester.
    • Jack Quinlivan is without a point in his last three games.
    • Zsombor Garat is without a point in his last four games.
