Game Story

North Charleston, SC — The Worcester Railers’ southern road trip continued Friday night with the Railers traveling two hours west from Greenville, where they shutout the South Carolina Stingrays 4-0 at North Charleston Coliseum.

Similar to their first shutout earlier in the season, the Railers played an almost flawless game on Friday night. Henrik Tikkanen made 41 saves, which was the same number he made in the first shutout on November 8th against Greenville. Trevor Cosgrove scored the first and last goals for Worcester, with Anthony Repaci and Billy Jerry each scoring a goal in between. Anthony Repaci kept his point streak alive for twelve straight games, while Brent Beaudoin extended his streak to seven games. The Railers performed flawlessly on their power play opportunities, scoring on both of their attempts, and successfully defended against both penalties they faced.

Neither team scored in the opening stanza with no penalties called in the opening frame. Railers lost Anthony Repaci after awkwardly colliding with a Stingrays defender around the 9:30 mark of the first period. He left with keeping weight off of his right foot but would come out at the start of the second period.

At the 2:30 mark of the second period, Worcester scored the first goal of the game to take a 1-0 lead following a scoreless opening period. Trevor Cosgrove shot the puck through traffic, and it went inside the left post to beat Tyler Wall, giving Worcester the advantage.

In the early stages of the third period, Anthony Repaci scored his 16th goal of the season on the power play to double Worcester’s lead. Repaci took a shot from the left circle that went past Wall’s glove, giving Worcester a 2-0 lead 6:16 into the third period.

With time winding down, South Carolina pulled their goalie, which resulted in Billy Jerry scoring his fourth goal of the season and extending Worcester’s lead to 3-0. Jerry shot the puck from center ice, and it went into the back of the open net, giving Worcester a three-goal advantage.

Another penalty by the Stingrays resulted in Worcester’s second power-play goal of the night, and Trevor Cosgrove’s second goal of the game to close out the contest.

The three stars of Friday’s game were:

  1. Henrik Tikkanen (Worcester) – win, 41 saves, shutout
  2. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 1 goal
  3. Trevor Cosgrove (Worcester) – 2 goals, 1 assist

On Friday night, the Adirondack Thunder scored four goals in the first period to defeat the Reading Royals 4-3. The Newfoundland Growlers won 3-1 on the road against the Trois-Rivières Lions. The Norfolk Admirals lost 2-1 in a shootout against the Wheeling Nailers. The Maine team was shut out 2-0 by the Idaho Steelheads on Friday night, and they will continue their trip out west into Saturday night. With this win, the Railers improved their record to 26-23-3 and are now 20-0 when leading after two periods.

The Railers head to Jacksonville, Florida to take on the IceMen at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
