Game Story

Reading, PA – The Worcester Railers beat the Reading Royals 2-1 in the first of back-to-back games at the Santander Arena on Friday night.

Parker Gahagen turned aside 40 shots against his former team in another standout performance, improving to 3-0-1 on the season. At the other end, Keith Petruzzelli made 28 saves in his eleventh career appearance against Worcester (now 6-5). The Railers extended their point streak to five games (4-0-1) and have now won three straight. TJ Walsh returned to the lineup after missing 13 games, having last played on Halloween when Worcester hosted Reading. Worcester’s goals came from Anthony Callin and Ross Mitton, while Carson Golder scored Reading’s lone tally.

The first period was scoreless, with Worcester outshooting Reading 12-8. The Railers had two full power plays and another called as the period expired. Riley Piercey had a late goal review after ringing a shot off the corner where the crossbar meets the post, but it was ultimately ruled no goal.

Just 43 seconds into the second, Worcester’s carryover power play became a 5-on-3 after a too-many-men penalty, but Reading killed it off. The Railers finally broke through at 6:26 when Anthony Callin scored in similar fashion to Piercey’s earlier attempt—this time the puck clearly crossed the line. After an extended review more than two minutes later, the goal was confirmed and the 122 seconds played afterward were added back to the clock.

At 13:20 of the second, Riley Ginnell dropped the gloves with Miles Gendron. After being forced into the fight, Ginnell recovered well and finished with a takedown. The sequence left Worcester with a four-minute power play that eventually became a 5-on-3 and then a 4-on-3, where Ross Mitton capitalized to make it 2-0.

Reading pushed back hard in the third, outshooting Worcester 19-3. They finally solved Gahagen at 13:54 when Carson Golder spoiled the shutout bid, while Riley Piercey sat for a roughing minor penalty. Petruzzelli was pulled late for the extra attacker, and Matt DeMelis came closest to sealing it into the empty net, missing just wide on a backhand with two seconds remaining.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Anthony Callin (Worcester) – 1 goal
  2. Carson Golder (Reading) – 1 goal
  3. Ross Mitton (Worcester) – 1 goal

The Adirondack Thunder beat the Maine Mariners 5-2 in Glens Falls earlier in the evening. The Norfolk Admirals fell 8-4 to the Florida Everblades after allowing five goals in a span of 2:39 in the second period, they have now lost six straight. The Wheeling Nailers beat the Greensboro Gargoyles, Ryan Mahshie scored a goal and was the game’s third star. The Railers have jumped into fourth place, tying the Royals with 20 points, with the Railers having one game in hand. The Trois-Riiveres Lions fell 4-1 to the Idaho Steelheads late into Friday night. All eight North Division teams play again Saturday in rematches from their Friday night games.

The Bridgeport Islanders fell 5-1 to the Utica Comets on Saturday night. Calle Odelius was a -2, while Daylan Kuefler and Jesse Pulkkinen were even on the night. Henrik Tikkanen was the backup goaltender to Marcus Hogberg, and freshly signed PTO’er Michael Suda was a healthy scratch. The Sound Tigers host the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Railers and Royals return to the Santander Arena on Saturday night, puck drop is at 7 p.m.
