St. John’s, NL — The Worcester Railers lost the opening game of a three-game series against the Newfoundland Growlers with a score of 5-2 at the Mary Brown’s Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland on Wednesday night.

The Railers were unable to recover from a rough start in which the Newfoundland Growlers scored two power-play goals within 1:14 in the first period. Growlers would extend the lead to 4-0 after two periods before Collin Adams scored Worcester’s first goal in the third period. The Growlers added another goal late in the third period on a shorthanded play with an empty net, followed by a power-play goal scored by Jake Schultz. Blake Christensen and Reece Newkirk were notable scratches for Wednesday’s game. Keith Petruzzelli made 36 saves out of 38 shots on goal while Henrik Tikkanen made 35 saves out of 39 shots on goal.  Collin Adams and Jake Schultz were the goal scorers for Worcester. Orrin Centazzo, Pavel Gogolev, Matt Sredl, and Issac Johnson scored for Newfoundland. As of Wednesday night, the Railers have won just two of their last ten games.

Orrin Centazzo and Pavel Gogolev each scored power-play goals in the first period to quickly give Newfoundland a 2-0 lead. Later in the first period, former Railer, Matthew Sredl scored a goal assisted by Keenan Suthers to end the first period with the score at 3-0 in favor of Newfoundland. Orrin Centazzo scored on Newfoundland’s first power play with Nolan Vesey in the box for tripping at 4:56. Pavel Gogolev quickly brought that lead to 2-0 as Quinn Ryan sat in the penalty box on a hooking call. Matt Sredl scored his first professional goal from the top of the right circle off a pass from Issac Johnson making the score 3-0 in favor of Newfoundland heading into the first intermission. The Railers were outshot 17-14 in the first period.

Orrin Centazzo scored his second of the game on a pass from Zach O’Brien to bring the Growlers’ lead to 4-0 in the second period.

Collin Adams ended the scoring drought for Worcester by scoring a goal at 7:40, shooting the puck into the net underneath the crossbar. The Worcester Railers had two consecutive power play opportunities in the final minutes of the third period. Henrik Tikkanen was pulled from the net during the first power play to give a two-man advantage to Worcester. However, Isaac Johnson scored into an open net for Newfoundland and Jake Schultz scored for Worcester during the power play, but Worcester could not catch Newfoundland, ultimately losing the game with a score of 5-2.

Railers and Growlers return to the Mary Brown’s Center on Friday for the second game of this week’s series at 5:30 p.m. EST (7:00 Newfoundland time).

  • Worcester Scratches: Blake Christensen, Jack Quinlivan, Liam Coughlin, Philip Beaulieu, and Reece Newkirk.
  • Newfoundland Scratches: Derian Plouffe, Jordan Escott, Luke Cavallin, Nathan Noel, and Taylor Egan.
  • On Tuesday, the Railers signed Nick Fea who had previously been playing with the Birmingham Bulls in the SPHL. Fea was a teammate of Artur Terchiyev and had scored 19 points in 18 games with the Bulls.
  • Jeff Solow was released on Monday and shortly after, the Glasgow Clan announced they have signed him for the remainder of the season. Solow had five assists and was a -3 in sixteen games for the Railers this season.
  • Collin Adams was returned to the Railers on Tuesday, following a recall to the Bridgeport Islanders. The Railers are 16-5-1 with Adams in the lineup.
  • Following Saturday’s game, the Railers had the following streaks:
