Game Story

Portland, ME — The Worcester Railers topped the Maine Mariners on Friday night after allowing two early goals in the first period.

Liam Coughlin scored his first career hat trick with a power play goal, a shorthanded goal, and an empty net goal. Two of Worcester’s newest signings made their pro debuts Friday. Adam Goodsir had assists on Beaudoin’s first two goals and had a team-high six shots on goal. Anthony Callin, younger Brother of Drew, who is now with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL. Ken Appleby had an excellent night with 32 saves. An excellent night overall for Worcester’s special teams’ units, going 1-for-2 on the power play and killing off all six penalties on the night.

The Railers trailed 2-0 after twenty minutes. Maine scored twice in a 61-second span for a comfortable early lead. Alex-Olivier Voyer scored on Alex Kile’s rebound off the pad of Ken Appleby at 16:35. Cam Askew scored a little over a minute later to double their lead. Adam Goodsir had a pair of shots while on the power play earlier in the period but was unable to find the back of the net with Francois Brassard making great saves on both attempts. Maine outshot Worcester 14-5 in the frame.

Liam Coughlin had a pair of goals to even the score in the second period. Liam Coughlin tipped home Adam Goodsir’s pass right in the goal on the power play at 12:27, getting Worcester on the board. Then, at 18:16, Coughlin scored shorthanded again with an assist from Goodsir, which tied the game at two goals apiece, the same score at the end of the second period.

It remained tied until just over three minutes left in regulation when Jacob Hayhurst scored a shorthanded goal on a 2-on-1 to give Worcester its first lead. Coughlin completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal just 36 seconds later. Although Chase Zieky’s backhand goal with 1:32 left gave the Mariners a chance to tie it with the extra attacker, Ken Appleby would hold on in net to secure the win for Worcester.

The three stars of Friday’s game were:

  1. Liam Coughlin (Worcester) – 3 goals
  2. Adam Goodsir (Worcester) – 2 assists
  3. Jacob Hayhurst (Worcester) – 1 goal

The Adirondack Thunder topped the Newfoundland Growlers earlier in the night, 6-2. Reading Royals annihilated the Atlanta Gladiators 8-2. Trois-Rivieres fell short of a comeback after blowing an initial 3-1 lead, losing 7-5 to the Florida Everblades. The Railers gained some ground with another win over Maine, who are just two points ahead with three games in hand. Maine has lost four straight, while Worcester has won three straight. Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 18.

Railers and Mariners head to Worcester Saturday night, where the Railers will wear a Boston Celtics-themed specialty jersey to coincide with the St. Patrick’s Day weekend at 7:05.
