Game Story

Greenville, SC — The Worcester Railers fell 3-1 to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits on Wednesday night at the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to top the Worcester Railers 3-1 on Wednesday night at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.

After a month-long break, Ken Appleby made his return to the starting lineup, having last started on January 21 against Maine during a 3-in-3 weekend where the team played against three different opponents in three consecutive days at the DCU Center. Appleby made 23 saves in his comeback game. Seven Railers players in the lineup Wednesday were riding point droughts of five games or higher. David Hrenak was the goaltender for Greenville, stopping all but one of Worcester’s 34 shots. Max Martin, Ethan Somoza, and Brent Kemp each scored for the Swamp Rabbits. Bobby Butler currently holds the team’s longest point drought, having gone eleven games without a point – a career-high for him. In contrast, Anthony Repaci continued his impressive point streak, extending it to eleven games and accumulating a total of sixteen points (8 goals, 8 assists) during that period. Brent Beaudoin scored Worcester’s only goal and also extended his own point streak to six games, amassing three goals and eight points, for eleven points in total.

Railers were outshot 9-6 in the opening frame while all action took place in the second period. This writer did not have this on his bingo card, but the Swamp Rabbits scored in the opening minute to kick off scoring in the second period. Max Martin was fed the puck from Alex Ierullo and found his way to the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead. Ethan Somoza would double the lead on a rebound to beat Ken Appleby seven minutes later to make it 2-0. With half a minute left on a Conor Breen penalty, Brett Kemp would make it 3-0 at 10:18.

Brent Beaudoin would score Worcester’s only goal 13 seconds into a powerplay to break up scoring. Anthony Repaci got a shot on the net before a rebound found Nick Fea who quickly passed it to Beaudoin in front for his fifteenth of the year. Beaudoin’s goal would be Worcester’s only goal of the night, but Beaudoin would have another shot that would bounce off the crossbar early in the third period.

The three stars of Wednesday night’s game were:

  1. David Henrak (Greenville) – win, 33 saves, 0.971 SV%
  2. Max Martin (Greenville) – 1 goal 2 assists
  3. Ethan Somoza (Greenville) – 1 goal, 1 assist

The Newfoundland Growlers beat the Trois-Rivieres Lions 6-1 earlier on Wednesday night. The Norfolk Admirals were on the road, where they were shut out by the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-0. The Maine Mariners are currently on a trip out west facing the Idaho Steelheads in a series that’ll continue into the weekend. The Railers are two points above the .500 mark as of Wednesday night and are ten points ahead of the Adirondack Thunder for fourth place in the North Division.

Next up, The Railers will travel to North Charleston, North Carolina where they are set to kick off the second half of their season-long road trip by facing the South Carolina Stingrays on Friday at 7:05 pm.

Notes

  • Worcester Scratches: Collin Adams, Connor McCarthy, Jack Quinlivan, Liam Coughlin, Myles McGurty, Nolan Vesey, Quinn Ryan, and Zack Bross.
  • Greenville Scratches: Austin Eastman and Dallas Gerads.
  • Henrik Tikkanen was returned to the Railers on Wednesday morning after being recalled before their road trip began. With the Railers being tight for space on the roster, Brent Moran was released to make room for Tikkanen. Moran’s two-month stint ended with a 3-4 record, 4.28 goals allowed average, and a 0.881 save percentage. Assuming he goes unclaimed on waivers, he’ll return to the Fayetteville Marksmen of the SPHL.
  • Jared Brandt was activated from the injured reserve list Wednesday after missing just under a month. He had one shot in a relatively quiet night for him Wednesday.
  • Trevor Cosgrove played right wing Wednesday with Quinn Ryan out of the lineup. No word on why Ryan was out of the line-up after coming off a two-goal game on the second game against Norfolk last weekend.
  • Following last weekend’s postponement, South Carolina Stingrays and Fort Wayne Komets game at the South Charleston Collesium faced a 40-minute postponement for you guessed it, poor ice conditions. This will be something to keep an eye on as the Railers head there Friday.
  • As of Wednesday night’s game, the Railers had the following streaks and droughts:
    • Bobby Butler is without a point in his last eleven games.
    • Brent Beaudoin extended his point streak to six games. (3-8-11)
    • Billy Jerry is without a point in his last five games.
    • Conor Breen is without a point in his last nine games.
    • Tim Faulkner is without a point in his last nine games.
    • Chris Ordoobadi is without a point in his last ten games.
    • Nick Fea snapped a four-game scoring drought with an assist on Brent Beaudoin’s goal.
    • Jared Brandt is without a point in his last six games.
    • Paul Boutossov is without a point in his last four games.
    • Max Johnson is without a point in his last three games.
    • Josh Victor is without a point in his last fourteen games.
    • Anthony Repaci snapped a four-game goal streak while extending his point streak to eleven games. (8-8-16)
