Game Story

Estero, FL — The Worcester Railers dropped their second straight game to the Florida Everblades 3-1 on Friday night.

John Muse made his fourth consecutive start, turning away 33 shots. David Tendeck, Florida’s goaltender, saved all but one of Worcester’s 35 shots. Muse had several “Save of the Game” candidates that kept this game close. Trevor Cosgrove scored the Railers’ lone goal, while Evan Boucher, Cam Darcy, and Joe Pendenza each found the net for Florida. With this loss, the Railers are now 1-4 on their southern road trip. Despite dressing four defensemen and having Brendan Robbins step in as the fifth, it was a defenseman who scored their only goal. Arytom Kulakov served a one-game suspension for an unpenalized boarding infraction, and Ryan Dickinson was scratched due to an injury from the last game. The Railers faced additional challenges when Ashton Calder left the game in the second period and did not return, leaving them shorthanded. The Railers have room for another player on the roster left open by Blade Jenkins being recalled to Hartford, but based on an interview played on the broadcast, head coach and GM Jordan Smotherman had confidence in the line-up that was dressed. Still, with an obvious hole in the line-up and several players being banged up, there’s no reason why players are not being brought in, which is a continuing trend from last season.

Trevor Cosgrove gave Worcester their only goal after he deflected the puck off goaltender David Tendeck for his sixth of the season at 5:37. Worcester’s only lead of this series lasted 38 seconds shy of ten minutes when Evan Boucher tied the game at 14:59 on a one-timer from Kyle Neuber. Both teams had a power play, but neither team had success. Railers outshot Florida 12-11 in the period.

Florida converted on the power play 16 seconds into their man advantage, just as Trevor Cosgrove sat for a cross-checking call. Cam Darcy scored on a cross-ice pass from Sean Josling and scored from the left face-off circle at 19:36. Florida had eleven shots in the closing 6:25 of the period, and Worcester had none. Shots were 16-10 in the second period.

Everblades Captain Joe Pendenza sealed the game for Florida, stealing the puck at the Railers’ blue line and putting the puck into the empty net with 42 seconds left in regulation.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Cam Darcy (Florida) – 1 goal
  2. Evan Boucher (Florida) – 1 goal
  3. David Tendeck (Florida) – 35 saves, win, 0.972 SV%

After Friday’s game, the Railers are back to .500 on the season, playing in their 50th game of the season. Fortunately, there wasn’t a whole lot of movement in the standings with the teams surrounding them also losing. The Adirondack Thunder beat the Reading Royals earlier in the night 4-1. The Newfoundland Growlers were shutout 4-0 to the Trois-Rivieres Lions, 4-0 in Trois-Rivieres. Norfolk beat the South Carolina Stingrays 3-2 in a come-from-behind win. Maine lost 5-3 to the Toledo Walleye. The Railers are five points behind the Newfoundland Growlers and four points ahead of Maine.

The series between Worcester and Florida concludes on Saturday at 7 p.m.
