Game Story

Estero, FL — The Worcester Railers and the Florida Everblades for the first of a three-game series on Wednesday night at the Hertz Arena.

John Muse made 34 saves on Wednesday night. Muse has started in sixteen of the Railers last 25 games. Longtime Everblades goaltender Cam Johnson stopped all but one of Worcester’s 24 shots. Jake Pivonka scored Worcester’s lone goal, while Sean Josling, Joe Pendenza, and Oliver Chau scored for Florida. The Railers are now 1-3 on this southern road trip with two games left.

It was Florida who ended the scoreless tie at 5:12 in the first period. Sean Josling deflected a shot from Evan Nause for the first tally of the night. Despite trailing 1-0, the Railers were lucky considering the scoring opportunities the Everblades had in the opening frame.

Jake Pivonka scored Worcester’s lone goal at 17:06 in the second period while on the power play. Pivonka’s shot was a one-timer fed from Trevor Cosgrove, which was made from the right faceoff circle with 1:26 remaining on the man advantage. The tie would be broken a minute and eight seconds later, where former Manchester Monarch Joe Pendenza would score after the Railers failed to gain control of the puck and a quick tic-tac-toe sequence beat John Muse at 18:14.

Tensions were high heading into the second period after Artyom Kulakov boarded Luke Santerno, with several Everblades, notably Kyle Neuber, wanting a piece of Kulakov. Kulakov’s hit went unpenalized and Santerno did not return to the game. Kulakov would drop the gloves with Cam Hausinger at 1:35 in the third period, and despite Hausinger celebrating after the fight, Kulakov emerged victorious in his third bout of the season. As of Thursday afternoon Kulakov was fined and suspended for the unpenalized boarding infraction.

The Everblades would extend their lead to 3-1 at 2:56 in the third period with Oliver Chau scoring 24 seconds into a power play that had Jake Pivonka in the box for a tripping call. The Railers would be unsuccessful in getting back to within one goal as Muse was pulled with 2:24 left in the game, and despite the Railers having control of the puck for the majority of the last five minutes, the Everblades would take game one of the series.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Oliver Chau (Florida) – 1 goal, 2 assists
  2. Sean Josling (Florida) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Cam Johnson (Florida) – 23 saves, win, 0.958 SV%

The Newfoundland Growlers beat the Reading Royals 5-3 earlier in the night, extending the Growlers’ lead to five points for third in the division over the Railers. All seven North Division teams play on Friday, Maine, Worcester, and Norfolk all play against opponents out of the division. Worcester is 4-5-1 in their last ten games, Maine has the same record while Reading and Trois-Rivieres have even worse records in that span, keeping some playoff hope alive with 23 games left on their regular season schedule.

The Railers are back at the Hertz Arena on Friday for game two of this series against the Everblades, puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
