Game Story
Glens Falls, NY — The Adirondack Thunder completed a sweep of the Railers, picking up wins in all three games this week with a final score of 2-1 at the Cool Insuring Arena on Saturday night.
The Railers dropped their third straight game to the Adirondack Thunder in another game that had the Railers within reach of a victory. Reece Newkirk scored the only goal for Worcester while Patrick Grasso and Shawn Weller scored goals for Adirondack. Ken Appleby was the start for Worcester, stopping 24 of 26 shots; while Jake Theut was 33 for 34 on the opposite end of the ice.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening frame, despite the Railers playing their best hockey in over a week. Unlike many periods before them, they outshot Adirondack 8-0 through the first half of the period. They had one power play in the first period thanks to a delay of game penalty, which they were unable to capitalize on, with four of their thirteen shots in the period coming in those two minutes. Worcester outshot the Thunder 13-9 in the opening twenty minutes.
Patrick Grasso broke the scoreless tie with a breakaway goal at 1:41 in the second period. Grasso picked up the puck on a blocked shot which put him in position to head down the sheet of ice beating goaltender Ken Appleby over the shoulder. Reece Newkirk tied the game back up around the 13-minute mark, with Bobby Butler collecting the puck after Jared Brandt sent the puck into the glass, and quickly passed the puck to Newkirk who was able to score at the crease to beat Jake Theut, sending the game into the third period with a 1-1 tie. The second came to an end all tied up as Worcester continued to outshoot Adirondack 13-8 in the period, and 26-17 for the game.
The Thunder would once again score on their first shot of the period come the third. On the power play, thanks to an early tripping call against Myles McGurty, Adirondack’s Shawn Weller deflected a shot to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead at 1:01 into the third period. Worcester would continue to make shots on net for the remainder of the period but would be unable to capitalize with Ken Appleby eventually being pulled for the extra attacker, with a 2-1 score as the clock winded down. Worcester outshot Adirondack 34-26, the first time they had outshot an opponent since March 4.
The three stars of Saturday night’s game were:
- Jake Theut (Adirondack) – 33 saves, win, 0.971 SV%
- Patrick Grasso (Adirondack) – 1 goal
- Shawn Weller (Adirondack) – 1 goal
Earlier in the night, the Trois-Rivieres Lions lost to the Norfolk Admirals 4-3 in overtime. The Maine Mariners were unable to recover from allowing five goals in the first period against the South Carolina Stingrays, resulting in a 7-3 loss. In Florida, the Newfoundland Growlers picked up a 3-2 win against the Everblades. The Wheeling Nailers emerged victorious over the Reading Royals, winning 6-5. With the end of the season approaching quickly, the Railers lead over the Thunder for the final playoff spot has been cut to three points. The Thunder have two more games to play compared to Worcester, with the Railers having seven games left on their calendar, five against the Thunder.
Railers host the Trois-Rivieres Lions on Wednesday night at the DCU Center, before welcoming back the Thunder for two games on Friday and Saturday.
