Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers dropped the second of back-to-back games against the Reading Royals on Saturday night, 4-2.

The boys in pink wore specialty jerseys that were auctioned off during and after the game to benefit the Cup Crusaders as a part of the annual Pink in the Rink festivities for Breast Cancer Research. Henrik Tikkanen’s game-worn jersey went for an astounding $1500 in the post-game auction. Tikkanen, making his second start of the weekend, made 33 saves while Reading’s Kaden Fulcher made 36. Anthony Repaci extended his point streak to eight games with the Railers’ first goal of the night while Brent Beaudoin began a streak of his own with the second. Devon Paliani, Evan Barratt, Max Newton, and Alec Butcher each tallied a goal for Reading. The Railers concluded their regular season series with a 4-2-1 record against the Royals.

Reading took an early lead less than a minute into the first period with former Railer Devon Paliani sending a wrist shot outside the left circle for the early lead in back-to-back games in Worcester. The shot beat a crowded net, going over the shoulder of Henrik Tikkanen to give the Royals their first of the night. Royals would score their second just three minutes later with Evan Barrett beating Tikkanen blocker-side. Their lead would be extended to 3-0 with Trevor Cosgrove turning over the puck while he was all alone in the Railers’ defending zone. Max Newton poked the puck away and passed to Charlie Gerard and scored on a backhand as Gerard went head-to-head with Tikkanen.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second period as both teams had two power plays a piece. Railers outshot the Royals with an additional shot to close out both the first and second periods with a total of 25-23.

The Railers finally got on the board with Anthony Repaci scoring five seconds into a power play on a delay of game penalty served to goaltender Kaden Fulcher. Repaci scored on a one-timer sent across the blue line from Trevor Cosgrove after Jacob Hayhurst won the face-off. The goal was Repaci’s fourth of the weekend and his thirteenth of the year. Royal’s would regain their three-goal advantage ten seconds later with the Railers out of position and putting Tikkanen in an awkward position behind the net resulting in a turnover, with Tikkanen scrambling to get back in net Alec Butcher scored, bringing the game to 4-1.

Conor Breen fought Devon Paliani after an initial hit-up high from Breen on Yvan Mongo in front of the penalty boxes at 12:47. Breen brought Paliani down with Paliani wanting more as both headed to the penalty boxes, with Breen’s night eventually coming to an end with the penalties eventually sorted out. Breen was given a match penalty for a hit to Yvan Mongo’s head, with the Royals being given a five-minute power play. It was hard to tell based on the FloSports replay and the video will certainly be reviewed, but it looked like Mongo and Breen were at the wrong place at the wrong time as Jacob Hayhurst brought the puck into the attacking zone at the time of the incident. Mongo stayed in the game following the hit, while Breen was headed to the locker room for an early shower.

While killing off Breen’s penalty, Brent Beaudoin scored shorthanded on a pass from Trevor Cosgrove, which cut the deficit to two goals with under 3 minutes remaining in regulation. Unfortunately, that would be the closest the Railers would come all night as the game came to a close.

The three stars of Saturday’s game were:

  1. Kaden Fulcher (Reading) – win, 36 saves
  2. Charlie Gerard (Reading) – 2 assists
  3. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 1 goal

The Newfoundland Growlers topped the Adirondack Thunder 5-2 earlier on Saturday night. Maine shutout Trois-Rivieres 4-0 on the Road. Norfolk suffered their worst loss of the season 10-2 to the Wheeling Nailers. As things weren’t great for Worcester Saturday, they could certainly be worse.

The Railers begin a six-game road trip beginning with back-to-back games against the Norfolk Admirals on Friday and Saturday. They’ll return to the DCU Center after two weeks on the road, where they’ll host the Growlers on back-to-back nights on March 3rd and March 4th.
