Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers beat the Reading Royals 2-1 in the second of three meetings between the two teams this week at the DCU Center.

Parker Gahagen got the start for the second time in the series and turned in another strong performance, stopping 36 shots to earn first-star honors and earned his 17th win of the season. Keith Petruzzelli made 20 saves for Reading. Anthony Callin and Matt DeMelis scored for Worcester, while Owen McLaughlin accounted for Reading’s only goal.

Much like Friday night, Worcester controlled the opening 20 minutes. The Railers scored both of their goals in the first period, and while that was all they managed offensively, it proved to be enough.

Worcester opened the scoring at 6:51 on the game’s first power play after Reading’s Hunter Johannes was called for high-sticking 1:12 earlier. Anthony Callin buried a one-timer off a feed from Case McCarthy for his 18th goal of the season. Matt DeMelis extended the lead to 2-0 at 11:51, finishing a setup from Cole Donhauser after being left uncovered in front. Shots were even at 13-13 after one period.

From there, Worcester appeared to go into cruise control over the final 40 minutes. At times, the Railers looked like they were killing a penalty despite skating at even strength. They were outshot 24-9 over the second and third periods combined.

Owen McLaughlin spoiled Gahagen’s shutout bid at 11:37 of the third period. Shots were 37-22 as Worcester took the second game of the series.

The three stars of the game were:
Parker Gahagen (Worcester) – win, 36 saves, 0.973 SV%
Anthony Callin (Worcester) – 1 goal
Matt DeMelis (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist

Around the North Division… The Trois-Rivieres Lions beat the Maine Mariners 2-1 up north. The Norfolk Admirals beat the Adirondack Thunder 6-5. The Greensboro Gargoyles were shutout 6-0 to the Allen Americans. The five teams who played Friday play again on Saturday, while the Wheeling Nailers face the Toledo Walleye. Maine plays Trois-Rivieres for the only other divisional game on Sunday afternoon.

The Bridgeport Islanders beat the Hartford Wolf Pack 4-2 on Friday night. Henrik Tikkanen earned his 16th win of the season with 32 saves and Daylan Kuefler scored Bridgeport’s first goal. They host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Thursday night.

The Railers and Royals have Saturday night off, and return to the DCU Center to close out the series on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m.
