Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers were back in action on Sunday afternoon, taking on the Manchester Monarchs at the DCU Center.

After missing his bobblehead night on Saturday, Mitch Gillam was in net for Worcester after being returned to Worcester on Sunday morning. Matt Gaudreau, who was also reassigned, played his first game in 2019.

Sunday’s game got off to a very slow start much like Saturday’s game. Not many shots and no goals, fights, or penalties in the opening frame.

Tommy Panico left the game briefly at the beginning of the second period after taking a stick to the face. He went down the tunnel for repairs and returned as the period was halfway over.

Matt Gaudreau scored his seventh goal of the season at 1:39 in the second period. Nick Sorkin fed the puck to Gaudreau who was in front of the net, waited for Charles Williams to come out of the crease, and tapped it in on the left side. Matt Schmalz would extend the Railers lead to two with a flurry of shots at the crease from both Schmalz and Tommy Kelley, before finding an opening on the right side at 8:00. Manchester would finally break through with their first of the afternoon at 9:02. Nic Pierog scored on a backhand shot past Mitch Gillam from the left circle. Tommy Kelley scored his first of the season with a backhand shot that made its way just under the crossbar at 18:10. Railers held a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.

Drake Ryshma cut the Railers lead back to one on a shot between the circles of the Railers zone, with the puck gliding to the right of Mitch Gillam. David Quenneville secured the win for Worcester with an empty net goal with 53 seconds remaining in the third period.

The Railers are back to above .500 on the season with their win on Sunday. They still trail Brampton by a single point as both Worcester and Brampton won in their games today.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Tommy Kelley (Worcester) – game winning goal, assist
  2. Matt Schmalz (Worcester) – goal, assist
  3. Nic Pierog (Manchester) – goal

Don’t blame us if we ever doubt you: The Railers are back in action next weekend with two games against the top dogs in the north, the Newfoundland Growlers on Friday and Saturday.
