Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers dropped the weekend finale against the Maine Mariners on Sunday afternoon, losing 3-2, making for a 1-1-1 (.500) record in the first 3-in-3 weekend of the season.

Tristan Lennox made his second start of the weekend after a stellar 43-save performance on Saturday, he made 24 saves against the Maine Mariners on Sunday. Brad Arvatnis was the starter for the Mariners, making 34 saves and earning his first ECHL win since April 2, 2022, with the Rapid City Rush. Jimmy Lambert, Adam Mechura, and Chase Zieky scored for Maine, Andrei Bakanov and Anthony Callin scored for Worcester. The Maine Mariners bussed to Worcester after back-to-back games against the Trois-Rivieres Lions just above the border. Despite the travel disadvantage, the Mariners showed no signs of fatigue against the Railers on Sunday.

Former Railer Jimmy Lambert opened up scoring on a feed from Gabriel Chicoine at 2:27, which was his first goal of the season in the first of ten meetings against his former team. Chicoine would set up another play four minutes later on the power play, passing to Adam Mechura on the blue line to make it 2-0 Maine. The Railers would go on to get 13 shots in the second half of the period after having just one at the 5:14 mark, with the Mariners leading 2-0 and shots all tied up at 14 each after twenty minutes.

The Mariners would bring their lead to 3-0 with Connor Welsh passing the puck directly to Chase Zieky while trying to get the puck out of his own zone, allowing for a rush to the right circle where he got the puck past Tristan Lennox for his first goal of the season for the only goal of the second period at 9:13. Tensions escalated at 18:43 in the second period when Andrei Bakanov, who had just scored but was called off-sides, ignited a scuffle in the left corner. Ryan Verrier and Gabe Guertler engaged in their first fights of the season during the altercation. Guertler received a game misconduct as the aggressor, along with a cross-checking minor for his actions in the scuffle.

The Railers would score twice in the third period, the first by Andrei Bakanov at 6:24, his third of the season, seconds after a 4-on-3 advantage, which also saw him in the penalty box for roughing, had concluded. Bakanov tapped in a rebound from Zach White at the doorstep, narrowing the gap to 3-1. Anthony Callin brought the Railers within one, just 20 seconds after Tristan Lennox was pulled for the extra attacker, securing his third goal of the season. Lennox was pulled again in a bid to level the game, but the Railers were unsuccessful with two shots on goal following Callin’s score.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Brad Arvantis (Maine) – win, 34 saves, 0.944 SV%
  2. Anthony Callin (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Chase Zieky (Maine) – 1 goal

With a win percentage of 0.464, the Railers find themselves two points out of fourth place in the North Division currently held by the Newfoundland Growlers. The Norfolk Admirals hold third place with a win percentage of 0.538, with one less game played.

The Railers are now off for their Thanksgiving break, picking things back up on Black Friday with back-to-back games against the Adirondack Thunder in Glens Falls at 7 p.m.
