Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers are now on a three-game winning streak after completing a “Home for the Holidays” sweep at the DCU Center with a 5-4 win overtime win against the Maine Mariners on Wednesday.

Henrik Tikkanen returned to the net for the Railers, securing his fourth consecutive start and making 19 saves on Wednesday. Brad Arvanitis, making his second start against Worcester, made 38 saves in Maine’s overtime loss. Anthony Repaci extended his goal streak to three games by scoring his eighth goal of the season, tallying six goals in the last seven games. Ashton Calder, with two goals, has accumulated seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) in the past three games. Daylan Kuefler contributed a goal and an assist, marking back-to-back multi-point performances. Quinn Ryan sealed the game with an overtime goal, his first since opening night, returning after missing 13 games due to injury. Jimmy Lambert netted two goals for Maine, while Alex Kile and Reid Stefanson each added a goal for the Mariners. Jake Pivonka and Trevor Cosgrove were recalled to Bridgeport on Wednesday morning, leaving Ashton Calder and Blade Jenkins as the only two players to have played in every game for the Railers this season.

For the third straight game, the opposing team scored first and held a lead through the first period. Also for the third straight game, the Railers came back through a deficit after that first period and emerged with a big two points. They are tied with the Trois-Rivieres Lions at a .500-point percentage and have three games in hand.

Former Railer Jimmy Lambert initiated the scoring by redirecting a pass from Reid Stefanson at the left boards at 3:40. Anthony Repaci cut that initial lead shot, swinging in a loose puck on an initial shot by Blade Jenkins at 5:51. Anthony Callin headed to the box the period’s sole penalty at 10:43 for tripping a Mariner entering the Railers zone. Alex Kile capitalized on the power play, executing a breakaway at 11:30, giving Maine a 2-1 lead heading into the second period, despite being outshot by Worcester 11-5 in the frame.

Ashton Calder tied the game back up with 2 goals just 31 seconds into the second period. Zach White won the initial face-off where Calder took the puck from the left circle and shot it past Brad Arvanitis. While shorthanded, Calder scored a second time on a breakaway at 8:38 after being fed a pass from Artyom Kulakov up the ice for the Railers’ first lead of the night. Daylan Kuefler brought that lead to 4-2 on the power play at 14:15 while being setup by Ryan Verrier. Jimmy Lambert brought the Mariners back within one a minute later while Keeghan Howdeshell sat for a tripping penalty.

Maine scored their fourth goal at 8:08 in the third period on a 3-on-1 with a tic-tac-toe maneuver from Reid Stefanson, Austin Albrecht, and Brooklyn Kalmikov that beat both Zsombor Garat and Henrik Tikkanen. After some feistiness between the two teams, the game headed into overtime where Quinn Ryan sent a one-timer from Connor Welsh past Arvanitis to secure the win at 4:34.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Quinn Ryan (Worcester) – game-winning overtime goal
  2. Ashton Calder (Worcester) – 2 goals, 1 assist
  3. Jimmy Lambert (Maine) – 2 goals, 1 assist

Jakov Novak scored three goals in Trois-Rivieres Lions 6-3 win over the Newfoundland Growlers on Wednesday, the only game in the North division. Coming up this weekend, all seven teams play on Friday and Saturday, and all teams except Trois-Rivieres and Maine play on New Year’s Eve.

The Railers will finish the year with a three-game series against the Reading Royals, starting on Friday at 7 p.m.
