Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers fell 4-2 to the Maine Mariners in their final meeting of the season at the DCU Center on Wednesday night.

Nolan Vesey and Anthony Repaci both scored for Worcester. Both of those goals came on the power play and in the first ten minutes of the game. Three of Maine’s goals were scored in a 2:45 time frame in the second period. Ken Appleby made 22 saves while Michael DiPietro made 35 for the Mariners. The season series with Maine ends with the Mariners winning the series with a 6-3-0-1 record, they hold an all-time record of 28-15-2-3 against Worcester. Nick Fea was in the lineup after being re-signed earlier in the week, and Ryan Da Silva made his Railers debut on Wednesday and looked like one of Worcester’s better defensemen. Anthony Repaci had a team-high 6 shots on goal with Trevor Cosgrove and Ryan Da Silva coming in at a close second with 5 each. Nick Fea, Liam Coughlin, Noah Delmas, Bobby Butler, and Andrei Bakanov all failed to register a shot on goal.

Worcester scored two power-play goals to take a 2-0 lead in the second period. The first goal was scored by Nolan Vesey at 1:02, as he backhanded his own rebound past Michael DiPietro. Anthony Repaci then doubled the Railer lead at 9:10 by finishing a cross-ice pass from Trevor Cosgrove.

However, the Mariners started their comeback at 10:16 of the second period when Austin Albrecht scored on a strong forechecking effort after receiving a feed from Grant Gabriele. Just a minute and a half later, Tyler Hinam tied the game by tipping home a pass from Carter Johnson. Cameron Morton picked up his first professional point with the secondary assist on the play. At 13:01, Albrecht and Hinam set up Reid Stefanson to put the Mariners ahead.

In the third period, the Mariners held onto their 3-2 lead despite a power play by Worcester. They then added an insurance goal at 15:28 when Tim Doherty scored after receiving a pass from Alex-Olivier Voyer and Mitch Fossier. The Railers were unable to generate any more offense with Ken Appleby being pulled with just over 3 minutes left in the game with the Railers falling 4-2 as the time ran out.

The three stars of Wednesday night’s game were:

  1. Reid Stefanson (Maine) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  2. Michael DiPietro (Maine) – 35 saves, win, 0.946 SV%
  3. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 1 goal

With the win, the Mariners closed the gap to one point behind the second-place Reading Royals in a battle for their home advantage in the playoffs. Worcester’s loss kept the Adirondack Thunder within a point of the fourth and final playoff spot, with the Thunder picking up a third game in hand. The Railers are 3-6-1 in their last ten games. With three games left in the Railers’ season and six games left in the Thunder’s season, there is still a scenario that puts the Railers in the playoffs – they will have to win all three of their remaining games, all against the Thunder. Railers could end the season with a maximum of 76 points if they win those three, the Thunder with 75 if they win their other three games and lose all three games to the Railers.

The Railers host the Adirondack Thunder on Saturday night for the final home game of the season, while the Mariners and Thunder face off on Friday and Sunday.
