The Chicago Blackhawks announced Thursday of the hiring of Don Granato to an assistant coach role. Granato served as the Worcester IceCats head coach for their last five seasons.

Granato described his hire as “bittersweet” and had expected to stay with the University of Wisconsin.

After the IceCats left in 2005, Granato became the assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues for the 2005-06 season. He later became the Head Coach for the Chicago Wolves for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. In 2010, he was a scout for the Vancouver Canucks.

Since 2011, he has had a variety of coaching roles for United States National and Junior teams. In this past season, he joined his brother Tony as the head coach for the University of Wisconsin.
