Worcester, MA – The Worcester Blades took on the second place Calgary Inferno for two games at the home on Saturday and Sunday.
Lack of scoring, shots on goal, and too many shots allowed continue to be the factors in the Blades’ fifth and sixth losses of the season. Blades are still the only CWHL team that hasn’t won a game after three weeks of action.
Game One
Mariah Fujimagari started in net for Worcester in Game one. Annie Belanger started the game for the Calgary Inferno in what would end up being a big win in her first pro game. Fujimagari made 42 shots while allowing 5 goals. Blades made just 17 shots on goal on Saturday, unable to find a single goal in sixty minutes.
The first period was one of the better periods the Blades have played so far this season. Worcester had two power play opportunities during the period that turned to be unsuccessful, and had one penalty kill that was successfully killed off. Inferno had over a minute of zone time late in the period, but Fujimagari managed to keep all shots out of the net. Shots were 10-4 Calgary in the first.
Kelty Apperson broke the tie at 6:45 in the second, putting the Inferno up with their first goal of the night that was assisted by Brigette Lacquette. The Inferno scored a second goal by Kacey Ballamy at 11:50, and a third goal at 16:59 by Blayre Turnbull on the power play. Calgary led 3-0 after forty minutes, outshooting Worcester 27-12.
Inferno would extend their lead to four with a slapshot by Venla Hovi to start the third period. Three minutes later, they would end up making that lead to five goals.
