Game Story

Portland, ME — The Worcester Railers opened their first road trip of the 2026-27 season with a 3-0 loss to the Maine Mariners on Saturday afternoon.

Parker Gahagen made 21 saves in his third consecutive start, while Luke Cavallin stopped all 15 shots he faced to earn his first win and shutout of the season. Max Andreev scored twice, both shorthanded, and Robert Cronin added a goal for Maine.

Despite getting three power-play opportunities in the opening period, Worcester struggled to establish any momentum. Max Andreev opened the scoring at 2:02, finishing a shorthanded 2-on-1 rush with Josh Bloom that left Ryan Wheeler defending both skaters. The goal came with just 15 seconds remaining on the Railers’ first power play. Cronin doubled Maine’s lead at 9:25, converting a pass from Antonio Venuto after being left uncovered in the right faceoff circle. Worcester held a 7-6 edge in shots after one, but Maine controlled play for much of the period and carried a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The second period brought more of the same. Andreev scored his second shorthanded goal of the afternoon at 2:36, teaming up with Bloom on another 2-on-1 rush, this time against Vinny Corcoran, to extend Maine’s lead to 3-0. Shots were even at 12 apiece through forty minutes.

Connor Federkow’s afternoon ended early when he received a boarding major and game misconduct at 1:55 of the third period. Worcester did not record its first shot of the period until midway through the frame. The Railers went on their sixth power play at 12:06, but again surrendered a dangerous shorthanded opportunity when Bloom broke free on a breakaway.

Gahagen was pulled late for an extra attacker, and Michael Suda kept the deficit at three with a strong effort to stop a puck rolling toward the empty net. Tensions boiled over with 1:11 left in the game, resulting in 30 combined penalty minutes, before Maine closed out the 3-0 win.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Max Andreev (Maine) – 2 shorthanded goals
  2. Luke Cavallin (Maine) – win, 15 saves, shutout
  3. Josh Bloom (Maine) – 2 assists

The Springfield Thunderbirds fell 3-2 to the Charolotte Checkers on Friday night. As of this writing, their Saturday game has not started yet.

Railers and Mariners return to the Cross Insurance Arena on Sunday for a 3 p.m. puck drop.

Notes

  • Worcester Scratches: Adam Samuelsson, Anthony Repaci, Gabe Blanchard, Riley Ginnell, and William Lavallière.
  • Gabriel Carriere was loaned to the Railers by the Hartford Wolf Pack on Tuesday. Carriere spent the previous two seasons in the San Jose Sharks organization, appearing in 54 games with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda and 29 with the Wichita Thunder. In 57 career AHL games, he has a 27-23-8 record, a 2.99 goals-against average, and a .892 save percentage. He appeared in three games with Hartford this season, going 1-2-0 with a 4.42 goals-against average and a .867 save percentage. Chase Clark was released to make room on the roster.
The Railers traded Dalton Duhart to the Florida
  • Everblades on Friday for cash considerations. Duhart joined Worcester late last season to complete the trade that sent TJ Walsh to the Indy Fuel. He appeared in five games with the Railers, recording a goal and an assist on April 12, 2026, at Greensboro.
  • Also on Friday, the Springfield Thunderbirds announced that they had signed Matt DeMelis for the remainder of the season. DeMelis remained with Worcester following the signing and was in the Railers’ lineup on Saturday.
  • I received a few messages about the different header photo in last Sunday’s recap, which was an on-the-fly decision during the game. Back in the 2019-20 season, before Woo Hockey went on hiatus, I had a photographer lined up to provide photos alongside our coverage. That’s still something I’d like to revisit, and I may eventually add a gallery tab for games where I’m in attendance and take enough pictures to make it worthwhile. For now, I’ll aim to get at least one good photo for the recap whenever I’m there. I usually try to match the header graphics to the teams and jerseys worn that day, but life sometimes gets in the way of having those ready.
  • Saturday’s trip to Portland was a spur-of-the-moment decision, but I’m glad I made it. Shoutout to Nick Eaton for helping me get a ticket and inviting me to watch warm-ups from the benches. A rumor circulated last weekend that the Maine organization had complained about Anthony Repaci standing behind the bench with the Railers’ coaching staff. Injured players joining their coaches behind the bench is fairly common around the ECHL and has happened plenty of times throughout the Railers’ history. As a nod to that unconfirmed rumor, we all wore Repaci jerseys. I don’t wear jerseys to games very often these days, particularly when covering them with a media pass. Since I don’t use media credentials for road games, this felt like a good opportunity to break one out.
  • After Saturday’s game, the Railers had the following scoring streaks and droughts:
    • Cam McDonald is without a point in his last three games.
    • Vinny Cocoran is without a point in his last three games.
    • Stevie Moses is without a point in his last three games.
    • Tyson Fawcett is without a point in his last three games.
    • Riley Piercey is without a point in his last three games.
    • Anthony Keher is without a point in his last three games.
