Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers held on to beat the Adirondack Thunder 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night.

Parker Gahagen stopped 23 shots to earn his 20th win of the season, becoming the sixth goaltender in Railers history to reach the 20-win mark in a single season. Tyler Brennan made 25 saves for the Adirondack Thunder. Worcester got goals from MacAuley Carson, Max Dorrington, and Drew Callin, while Dylan Wendt and Grant Loven scored for Adirondack. Drew Callin (4-2-6) extended his point streak to five games, while Adam Samuelsson (1-4-5) extended his with an assist on Dorrington’s goal.

Worcester got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead at 4:41 of the first period. MacAuley Carson cut into the left circle and slipped a low shot under Brennan’s left pad for the opening goal. The Railers added to their lead late in the period when Max Dorrington pounced on a rebound after Brennan made a strong initial save, sliding the puck past his outstretched glove with 1:34 remaining in the frame. Worcester carried a 2-0 lead into the intermission while outshooting Adirondack 13-11.

The second period featured plenty of emotion. At 7:40, Max Dorrington went after Tanner Edwards after Edwards delivered a heavy hit on Xavier Jean-Louis. Dorrington landed the bulk of the punches as the two dropped the gloves, both avoiding fighting majors with roughing penalties. Adirondack cut into the deficit at 10:41 when Dylan Wendt redirected a low shot from Conner Hutchison over Gahagen’s left shoulder to make it 2-1. The Thunder held a slight 7-6 edge in shots in the period.

Adirondack pulled even late in regulation at 17:51 of the third, just moments after Samuelsson stepped out of the penalty box following a delay of game minor. Grant Loven found a rebound off a Kevin O’Neil chance and scored on the backhand to tie the game 2-2. The Thunder also edged Worcester in shots during the third, 7-5.

In overtime, Worcester controlled possession and generated four shots before Drew Callin delivered the winner. Anthony Callin set up his brother with a backhand pass, and Drew finished it off to seal Worcester’s 34th win of the season.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Drew Callin (Worcester) – game winning goal
  2. Max Dorrington (Worcester) – 1 goal
  3. MacAuley Carson (Worcester) – 1 goal

With the Trois-Rivieres Lions beating the Maine Mariners, the Railers have clinched sixth place in the Norht Division. Trois-Rivieres has the tie-breaker with more overtime wins, even if Worcester wins on Sunday.

The Bridgeport Islanders beat the Hershey Bears 2-1 in their final game of the regular season on Saturday night. Calle Odelius scored his first goal of the season, which was the game-winner. They’ll face each other in the first round of the playoffs as they are the fourth and fifth teams in the Atlantic Division. Expect players to be recalled after Sunday’s game.

The season concludes on Sunday afternoon, when the Railers host the Thunder again at 3:05 p.m.
