Game Story
Glens Falls, NY – The Worcester Railers took game two of their 3-in-3 weekend at the former Glens Falls Civic Center, beating the Adirondack Thunder 5-2.
Tristan Lennox got the start for Worcester and turned aside 13 shots before giving way to Parker Gahagen, who finished the game and made 12 saves in relief. Anthony Repaci tied Terry Virtue for the most points in Worcester Hockey history (210) with his first-period goal, then officially claimed sole possession of first place with an assist on Drew Callin’s tally later in the night. Worcester’s goals came from Cole Donhauser (who recorded his first career hat trick), along with Repaci and Callin. Jeremy Hanzel and Justin Taylor scored for Adirondack.
Cole Donhauser opened the scoring at 5:28 of the first, redirecting a Michael Suda feed for his first of the evening. Adirondack answered four and a half minutes later when Hanzel ripped a shot from the left circle to even the game. Repaci restored the lead on a one-timer set up by Ryan Miotto from in front of the Thunder crease. Despite being outshot 14-7 in the opening frame, Worcester took a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Tempers carried over from Friday as Lincoln Hatten and Jacob Graves dropped the gloves for a rematch at 9:32. The fight mirrored their previous fight, both players ditched their helmets, Graves landed a couple early punches, and Hatten slipped to the ice before each was assessed seven minutes in penalties.
Gahagen took over in net to begin the second, and for the second straight game, the first shot he faced found the back of the net. A miscue on a Luke Reid pass led to Ross Mitton poking the puck toward Justin Taylor, who buried a one-timer to tie things at 2-2. Worcester responded quickly, just over a minute later, Donhauser finished a setup from Gleb Veremyev to complete his second of the night. Drew Callin extended the lead to 4-2 at 16:29 on a feed from his brother. Worcester outshot Adirondack 11-6 in the middle period and doubled their lead heading into the third.
Jeremy Brodeur was pulled for an extra skater with 2:41 left in regulation. Forty seconds later, Donhauser scooped up the puck near the Adirondack bench and launched it into the empty net, sealing his hat trick and a 5-2 win for the Railers.
The three stars of the game were:
- Cole Donhauser (Worcester) – 3 goals, +3
- Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist
- Michael Suda (Worcester) – 2 assists, +2
Earlier on Saturday, the Trois-Rivières Lions blanked the Reading Royals 3-0. The Greensboro Gargoyles defeated the Jacksonville Icemen 4-1, with former Railer Kolby Johnson scoring Jacksonville’s only goal. The Maine Mariners also picked up a 4-1 win over the Norfolk Admirals, while the Wheeling Nailers routed the Cincinnati Cyclones 8-3 at home, a game in which Ryan Mahshie recorded one of Wheeling’s eight tallies. Five of the eight North Division teams are in action on Sunday, with Greensboro, Norfolk, and Maine all getting the day off.
In the AHL, Henrik Tikkanen stopped 31 shots in Bridgeport’s 3-0 shutout victory over the Springfield Thunderbirds on Saturday night. Bridgeport is off until Friday, when they travel to Utica to take on the Comets at 7 p.m.
The Railers and Thunder close out the 3-in-3 weekend on Sunday at 3 p.m.
