Game Story

Glens Falls, NY — The Worcester Railers and Adirondack Thunder met for the fifth of eleven meetings this season on Friday, in the first of back-to-back games at the Cool Insuring Arena. The Railers secured their sixth victory of the season, pushing the game into overtime where Todd Goehring sealed the win 3:17 into the extra period.

Henrik Tikkanen brought an end to a five-game losing streak, facing 25 shots on Friday. Vinnie Purpura, making his third appearance against Worcester, stopped 22 of 26 shots. Trevor Cosgrove extended his point streak to five games, contributing a goal and two assists, accumulating two goals and seven assists during that period. Friday’s game marked Worcester’s fifth overtime appearance and their first overtime victory of the season. Zach White, Ashton Calder, Trevor Cosgrove, and Todd Goehring each notched goals for Worcester, while Colin Felix, Yushiroh Hirano, and Ryan Orgel tallied for the Adirondack Thunder.

Zach White initiated the scoring at 14:59 of the opening period, finding the net on the doorstep of Vinnie Purpura, courtesy of a pass from Blade Jenkins. However, the Railers’ lead lasted a mere seventeen seconds, as Colin Felix equalized with a slapshot from the left circle. Heading into the second period, the game was tied, with the Thunder holding a slight edge by outshooting the Railers 11-10 in the frame.

Yushiroh Hirano broke the deadlock late in the second period, capitalizing on a power play opportunity while Riley Piercey served a tripping penalty. Hirano skillfully sniped the puck under the crossbar at 19:09, giving the Thunder a 2-1 lead.

In the third period, Ashton Calder leveled the game for the Railers at 9:09, deflecting a shot from Trevor Cosgrove. However, Adirondack quickly responded, with Ryan Orgel scoring at 9:48 off the skate of Zach White, reclaiming the Thunder’s lead at 3-2. With Henrik Tikkanen pulled for the extra attacker, Trevor Cosgrove scored amidst heavy traffic in front of the net, beating Vinnie Purpura’s left pad and forcing overtime.

In a play that almost saw Ashton Calder offside, Todd Goehring seized the puck at center ice and scored from just outside the left circle, securing the Railers’ first overtime victory of the season.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Todd Goehring (Worcester) – game-winning goal
  2. Ryan Orgel (Adirondack) – 1 goal
  3. Trevor Cosgrove (Worcester) – 1 goal, 2 assists, +3

The Railers and Thunder will face off once more on Saturday at 7 p.m., with the Thunder hosting Military Appreciation Night featuring speciality jerseys.
