Game Story

Worcester, MA — The Worcester Railers emerged victorious Sunday afternoon, taking down the Maine Mariners 4-3 after a back-and-forth battle for the lead which took place throughout the whole game.

Henrik Tikkanen made 25 stops Sunday, Michael DiPietro had 20 on the opposite end of the ice. Railers goals were scored by: Chris Ordoobadi, Anthony Repaci, and Brent Beaudoin. Chase Zieky had a pair of goals and Marc-Oliver Duquette scored the initial goal for Maine.

Chris Ordoobadi kicked off the scoring for Sunday’s game, batting home a rebound from Josh Victor at 9:12 in the first period. It was Ordoobadi’s first goal this season as a Railer, additionally, it was Victor’s first point in a Railers uniform. Victor had snapped a scoring drought of 19 games, eight of which had been played for the Railers. The Railers’ early lead was short-lived as Marc-Olivier Duquette capitalized on a turnover at center ice and a pass from Reid Stefanson to score just 47 seconds later, beating Henrik Tikkanen from the slot. The Railers managed to regain the lead when Anthony Repaci made contact with a shot from Jared Brandt and scored his 20th goal of the season, five-and-a-half minutes later. With under a minute left in the first period, Chase Zieky capitalized on the lack of defensive coverage, scoring on a slapshot from the left circle with 27 seconds left in the first period.

The Mariners scored early in the second period which was ruled no goal after a video review. Mitchell Fossier hit the crossbar and the play as it was ruled a goal initially on the ice, but upon video review, it never bounced into the net or crossed the goal line. Chase Zieky scored his second of the afternoon after Henrik Tikkanen made an initial stop from Marc-Olivier Duquette, but Zieky picked up the puck for the quick goal before Tikkanen had a chance to react. Brent Beaudoin scored heading into the attacking zone during a line change, beating Connor Doherty and Michael DiPietro glove side at 15:14, keeping the game tied up heading into the second period.

Brent Beaudoin, who was named this week’s Player with Heart, scored his second of the game that ended up being the game-winner on the power play at 16:15 in the third period. Maine would pull DiPietro for the extra attacker with 2:04 while Jared Brandt sat for a holding call. The Railers would hold on for the win, eventually killing that penalty off and keeping the puck out of their zone for the remaining four seconds on the clock. Cam Askew was given an early shower with a misconduct at 18:31 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The three stars of Sunday’s game were:

  1. Brent Beaudoin (Worcester) – 2 goals
  2. Chris Ordoobadi (Worcester) – 1 goal
  3. Chase Zieky (Maine) – 2 goals

Reading emerged victorious in a 5-4 overtime win against the Growlers in Saint John’s. Meanwhile, the Adirondack Thunder claimed a 5-2 victory over the Trois-Rivieres Lions in Glens Falls. Norfolk had the day off. As of Sunday, the Railers are currently trailing the Maine Mariners by four points in the north division standings (with Maine having three games in hand). They hold a comfortable nine-point lead over the Adirondack Thunder for fourth place (with Adirondack having two games in hand). The Adirondack Thunder will face the Newfoundland Growlers three times in the upcoming week starting on Wednesday, where the season record is currently tied 4-4 with all games ending in regulation.

The Railers and Mariners are back at it again next weekend where they’ll play at they’ll play in Portland Friday, return to Worcester Saturday, and head back up to Portland for a matinee on Sunday.

  • Maine Scratches: Conner Bleackley, Griff Jeszka, Jacob Wilson, and Keltie Jeri-Leon.
  • For those looking for a recap from Friday night’s game, there wasn’t one posted by Woo Hockey. Unfortunately, I spent the majority of my evening in the emergency room dealing with a lower-body abscess that made mobility extemely painful. After eight hours in the ER and around twelve hours in and out of doctor’s offices it was drained and I was back home and resting comfortably. Thanks to everyone who had reached out when I tweeted I was headed there, I’m feeling much better now. I’ll most likely backdate a post for continuity purposes for this game when time allows at a later date.
  • Noah Delmas was once again a forward for Sunday’s game, he currently has the lowest +/- with -28.
  • The Jersey raffle of the game was an orange #5 Jared Brandt jersey, worn during the 2021-22 season. Friday night’s jersey raffle was a #11 jersey that did not feature a name on the back, but the team wore them during the 2019-20 season.
  • Following Sunday’s game, the Railers had the following scoring streaks and droughts:
    • Connor McCarthy is without a point in his last five games.
    • Liam Coughlin is without a point in his last six games.
    • Trevor Cosgrove is without a point in his last seven games.
    • Nolan Vesey is without a point in his last six games.
    • Billy Jerry is without a point in his last seven games.
    • Phil Beaulieu snapped a six-game scoring drought with two assists on Sunday.
    • Myles McGurty snapped a four-game scoring drought with an assist on Sunday.
    • Josh Victor snapped a nineteen-game scoring drought with an assist on Sunday. Eight of those previous games had been played for the Railers.
