Game Story
Jacksonville, FL — The Worcester Railers fell 4-1 to the Jacksonville Icemen on Saturday night at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
Ken Appleby made 20 stops on 22 shots while Olaf Lindbom made 36. Anthony Repaci scored the only goal for Worcester, who is now riding a thirteen-game point streak with his seventeenth goal of the season. Brent Beaudoin had his point streak stopped at seven games. Tim Faulkner snapped a ten-game scoring skid, while Nick Fea entered a new point streak with assists in his last three games. Craig Martin, Luke Lynch, Zach Jordan, and Derek Lodermeier had the scoring tallies for Jacksonville. The Railers trailed by a goal for most of the game, but were unable to find the game-tying goal after Jacksonville regained the lead with Jacksonville scoring two empty-net goals with under a minute left in the third period.
Jacksonville scored first at 13:06 in a scramble for the puck, where Craig Martin turned around for a quick snipe to beat Ken Appleby. Minutes later, the Icemen scored again but it was waived off for goaltender interference. Ken Appleby made an incredible highlight-reel save with 5:15 left in the period to keep the Railers within one goal. With ten seconds left in the period, the Railers had a power play opportunity after Zach Jordan shoved Max Johnson. Although the power play carried into the second period, Worcester was unable to score before the end of the period.
At the start of the second period, Worcester had one minute and fifty seconds left on their powerplay. Despite their recent success with powerplays, Worcester was unable to capitalize on this one. However, Anthony Repaci later managed to tie up the game by threading the puck between Lindbom and the post, extending his point streak to thirteen. Worcester would have another power play at 8:08 for a delay of game but would come up short in their opportunity to get the go-ahead goal. Unfortunately, Worcester suffered from bad luck when the puck bounced off a Railers defenseman and landed at the stick of Luke Lynch, who scored to make it a one-goal game again.
With six minutes left, Max Johnson was elbowed in the face, giving Worcester another power play. Although they had several good opportunities, Worcester was unable to score. With two minutes left, Appleby left the goal empty for an extra skater. The Railers controlled the puck for a minute and fifteen seconds but a missed shot by their defense led to an Icemen goal by Zach Jordan. The Railers pulled Appleby again in search of two goals in forty seconds, but the Icemen scored again on the empty net, this time by Derek Lodermeier (15th), resulting in a 4-1 loss for the Railers.
The three stars of Saturday’s game were:
- Olof Lindbom (Jacksonville) – 36 saves, win, 0.973 SV%
- Luke Lynch (Jacksonville) – 1 goal
- Craig Martin (Jacksonville) – 1 goal
With three goals in the third period, the Trois-Rivieres Lions beat the Newfoundland Growlers for their twentieth win of the season on Saturday. The Reading Royals beat the Adirondack Thunder in Glens Falls 2-1 in overtime. Norfolk Admirals lost 6-3 to the hands of the Wheeling Nailers. Maine and Reading are tied with 61 points for second and third in the division, overall not a great night for the Railers as the teams above and below them in the division grab at least a point.
The Railers begin their trek back home Sunday, where they’ll head to Savannah Georgia to face the Ghost Pirates for the first time in franchise history at 3 PM.
