Norfolk, VA — The Worcester Railers began their six-game road trip on Friday night with a 5-3 victory over the Norfolk Admirals at the Norfolk Scope.

Railers went with Brent Moran as the starting goaltender on Friday night, making 33 saves on 36 shots with Ken Appleby serving as the backup goaltender after missing nearly a month due to injury. He had a near-perfect game for the opening 42 minutes before allowing his first goal of the night. The Admirals were unable to score until the third period, as an early goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference. Tomas Vomacka started in net for Norfolk but was replaced by Cale Morris after allowing three goals on sixteen shots midway through the second period. Morris then let in two more goals on seventeen shots. The Railers had five different players score on Friday night – Quinn Ryan, Anthony Repaci, Jake Pappalardo, Connor McCarthy, and Andrei Bakanov. Meanwhile, Todd Burgess, Tanner Schachle, and Griffin Lunn scored for Norfolk in the third period. Anthony Repaci extended his point streak to nine games (7-6-13) with a goal and two assists, while Brent Beaudoin extended his to four games (2-6-8).

Norfolk scored the initial goal at the 7:29 mark of the first period but was waved off for goaltender interference. Darren McCormick made contact with Brent Moran’s pads at the crease, who had thought he had deflected a shot from Ian White. Luck seemed to be in Worcester’s favor on the call as the video shown on the FloSports feed doesn’t have a great view of the contact. Quinn Ryan scored later on in the period, at 16:03 with a one-timer from Anthony Repaci to give the Railers the 1-0 lead. The Admirals outshot the Railers 13-11 in the period.

The momentum would keep going into the second period with Anthony Repaci scoring on a breakaway fed up the ice from Billy Jerry at 4:27 for his fourteenth goal of the season. Jake Pappalardo would extend the lead to 3-0 with a breakaway of his own for his first ECHL goal at 10:01. Tomas Vomacka would be pulled with Cale Morris heading into the Norfolk goal for the second half of the game. Railers had a nice 3-0 lead; outshooting Norfolk 22-20 through forty minutes.

Connor McCarthy scored on a one-timer from the right circle at 2:29 with a pass from behind the net from Anthony Repaci. Todd Burgess would end Brent Moran’s shutout bid on a loose puck. Andrei Bakanov scored shorthanded after making an initial shot, Brent Beaudoin collected the rebound and sent it back to Bakanov who sent it into the net with a slapshot from the right circle. Admirals would score twice in a 47-second span, bringing the game to 5-3 with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Admirals would pull their goalie and use their timeout with two minutes left in the third period, but neither team would have another opportunity to score with the game ending with the eventual 5-3 score.

The three stars of Friday night’s game were:

  3. Quinn Ryan (Worcester) – 1 goal

Earlier in the night, the Adirondack Thunder defeated the Atlanta Gladiators 4-2, while the Maine Mariners secured a 5-0 shutout against the Trois-Rivieres Lions at home. On Saturday night, all North Division teams are set to play, with the Railers and Admirals having the latest start time out of the four games. The Railers are currently eleven points ahead of the Thunder for fourth place, while they trail the Reading Royals by four points for third place in the division.

The Railers and Admirals are back at it again Saturday at a special start time of 6:05 p.m.

  • Norfolk Scratches: Alex Pommerville, Billy Constantinou, Blake Murray, and Carson Musser.
  • The Railers traded for Max Johnson (Wheeling Nailers), Chris Ordoobadi (Orlando Solar Bears), and Josh Victor (Florida Everblades) this week as their roster remains thin due to call-ups and a number of players on injured reserve. They’re currently playing musical numbers as there are more players on the roster than numbers on jerseys. Josh Victor was issued #44, Ordoobadi was issued #20 (which he wore last year), and Max Johnson was issued #37. Given the trend of numbers being re-issued to new players, it looks like Reece Newkirk could be re-assigned a number when he returns if Max Johnson is still on the roster, as was the case with Jimmy Lambert wearing #44 instead of #17, which had been issued to Conor Breen.
  • Ken Appleby was activated from the injured reserve this week after missing nearly four weeks due to injury. Brent Moran made the start as Henrik Tikkanen was on recall with the Bridgeport Islanders, and served as the backup for Bridgeport on Friday night. Tikkanen has yet to make his AHL debut and could make his debut this weekend with Bridgeport hosting Springfield Saturday night before making a quick trip down to Wilkes-Barre on Sunday for a game at 3:05 p.m.
  • The Savannah Ghost Pirates were named hosts of the 2024 ECHL all-star game on Friday night. While it’s no surprise the Worcester Railers weren’t named hosts, they are expected to host an outdoor game at Polar Park before Worcester hosts an all-star game again, which they hosted in 2009 with the AHL All-Star Classic.
  • A special thanks to Worcester’s Wormtown Brewery who hosted a watch party for Friday’s game, which was unofficially the first watch party of the season for Railers fans in conjunction with the Worcester Railers Booster Club. Around 30 Railers fans packed the upstairs function room for the game.
