Game Story

Worcester, MA – The Worcester Railers took on the Manchester Monarchs for the final game of the regular season in Worcester on Sunday.

As the Railers playoff fate was secured earlier this week, there were notable healthy scratches for the Railers: Barry Almeida, Mike Cornell, and Matt Gaudreau. With the Adirondack Thunder winning their game earlier in the day, the Railers will face the Thunder in the first round. The winner of that series will face the winner of the Manchester–Reading Series.

Neither team scored in the first period. Manchester outshot Worcester 7-6 in the opening frame.

Monarchs’ Sam Kurker scored top-shelf on a shot in front of Railers’ netminder Will King. Yanick Turcotte fought Tony Turgeon for his 20th of the season and is now tied for the lead in most fighting majors in the ECHL. After 40, the Railers trailed by one and were outshot 13-12 in the period.

Railers appeared to have scored halfway through the third period, with a goal being waved off as it wasn’t clear whether the puck past the goal line, another case in which video review in the ECHL would be of use. Manchester put the game away with an empty-net goal with 1:21 left in the game.

The three stars of the game were: Yanick Turcotte, Frankie DiChiara, and Will King. One of the stars should’ve gone to Manchester’s Evan Cowley with his shutout win.

Railers will face the Adirondack Thunder in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs next week. A full schedule will be finalized and passed along as all dates and times are finalized.
