Game Story

Trois-Rivieres, QC – Two late goals cost the Railers a win in an easily winable game, falling 3-1 to the Trois-Rivieres Lions on Sunday afternoon.

Henrik Tikkanen made his first start for the Railers since November 3, stopping 27 of 29 shots. Luke Cavallin made his first appearance against Worcester as a member of the Lions, marking his tenth career game against the Railers. The previous nine appearances came while he was with the Newfoundland Growlers over the past two seasons. Cavallin earned his second win of the season after making 33 saves. Captain Anthony Repaci scored the lone goal for Worcester, extending his point streak to three games. Logan Nijhoff, Nicolas Guay, and Anthony Beauregard were the goal scorers for Trois-Rivières. The Railers’ penalty kill, ranked second to last in the league, allowed a quick power-play goal with under two minutes remaining, sealing the loss. Ten Railers skaters were held without a point over the weekend, with seven of them failing to score in any of the team’s four games this week.

The game remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes, but there was some excitement when Kolby Johnson and Morgan Adams-Moisan dropped the gloves at 12:41. Johnson held his own in the fight, landing few punches but eventually taking Adams-Moisan to the ice. Luke Cavallin made seven saves for Trois-Rivières, while Henrik Tikkanen stopped 11 shots for Worcester.

The Railers had an early power-play opportunity in the second period when Jakov Novak’s stick made contact with Griffin Loughran’s face, sending Loughran to the locker room for repairs and giving the Railers a four-minute power play. However, they were unable to capitalize on any of their three shots. Just after the penalty expired, Logan Nijhoff broke the tie with a goal at 9:08. Worcester outshot Trois-Rivières 14-8 in the period.

The Railers tied the game early in the third, with Anthony Repaci scoring off a power play that carried over from a roughing minor issued to Morgan Adams-Moisan after the buzzer in the second. With under two minutes left in regulation, Mason Klee was called for high sticking, and 23 seconds later, Nicolas Guay scored on the ensuing power play to give Trois-Rivières a 2-1 lead. Henrik Tikkanen was pulled for the extra attacker with 1:05 remaining, but Anthony Beauregard sealed the win for the Lions with an empty-net goal 38 seconds later.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Riley Piercey (Worcester) – 2 goals including the game-winner
  2. Jakov Novak (Trois-Rivieres) – 2 goals, 1 assist
  3. Anthony Repaci (Worcester) – 2 goals

In the North Division, the Reading Royals cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Adirondack Thunder in Glens Falls. Meanwhile, the South Carolina Stingrays maintained their dominance, defeating the Maine Mariners 5-1. Action resumes Wednesday night, with five of the division’s seven teams hitting the ice. The Railers travel to Portland to face the Mariners at 7 p.m., while the Lions visit Worcester next weekend for back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday.

Notes

  • Worcester Scratches: Cole Crowder, Colin Jacobs, JD Dudek, Matias Rajaniemi, and Michael Bullion.
  • Trois-Rivières Scratches: Brycen Martin, Israel Mianscum, Mathieu Boislard, William Provost, and Zachary Émond.
  • Griffin Loughran exited the game in the second period after taking a high stick from Jakov Novak. He later returned with a mask attached to his helmet. Loughran is unofficially the team leader in drawing high-stick penalties.
  • The ECHL gamesheet for Saturday showed Jordan Kaplan as wearing an alternate captain’s letter for the Railers, but it was not listed on Sunday. With Colin Jacobs missing both games, the Railers opted not to designate an alternate captain, and Kaplan did not wear the letter in either matchup.
  • On Sunday afternoon, the Railers placed Matias Rajaniemi on the reserve list to meet roster requirements established at 3 PM. These rules limit active rosters to 20 players, with allowances for up to 2 players on reserve, 1 on 3-day injured reserve, and an unlimited number on 14-day injured reserve. Once Michael Bullion, JD Dudek, or Cole Crowder are activated from their respective injured reserve designations, a roster cut or recall will be necessary.
  • The Railers had the following scoring streaks:
    • Ryan Verrier is without a point in his last three games.
    • Jordan Kaplan snapped his point streak at three games.
    • Jack Randl is without a point in his last three games.
    • Kolby Johnson is without a point in his last three games.
    • Andrei Bakanov is without a point in his last four games.

    • Anthony Repaci is now on a three-game point streak with the only Railers goal of the game.
