Trois-Rivieres, QC – The Worcester Railers fell 4-3 to the Trois-Rivieres Lions in the shootout on Sunday afternoon.

Parker Gahagen had his second start of the weekend, making 31 saves in net for Worcester. Ben Gaudreau made 30 saves for Trois-Rivieres. Riley Piercey, Calle Odelius, and MacAuley Carson scored goals for the Railers. Jacob Dion, Mathieu Bizier, and Issac Dufort scored for the Lions. Nicholas Girouard won the game for the Lions with the only goal in the fifth round of the shootout.

The Lions had the early advantage, scoring on their first shot of the game 59 seconds into the game. Jacob Dion beat Parker Gahagen through the pads on a shot from the blueline. At 6:22, Lions took a 2-0 lead when Jacob Dion set up Mathieu Bizier’s slapshot in the left faceoff circle. Shots were 10-9 Worcester after twenty minutes.

Riley Piercey put the Railers on the board, beating Gaudreau with a shot under his glove at 6:47 in the second period. Calle Odelius tied the game eight minutes later after collecting a rebound from the point and shooting through some traffic at 14:29. Issac Dufort regained Trois-Rivieres lead at 18:32 on a one-timer from Anthony Beauregard. Worcester and Trois-Rivieres each had 10 shots in the second period.

MacAuley Carson tied the game back up at 11:24 in the third period, when his shot went through the pads of Gaudreau on a nice one-handed pass from Max Dorrington. The game would head to overtime with Worcester outshooting Trois-Rivieres 9-8 in the third period.

Parker Gahagen kept Worcester in the game, making seven saves throughout the overtime period. Worcester made four shots during those seven minutes of play. Nicholas Girourard would eventually take the game in the fifth round of the shootout.

With just over a month remaining in the ECHL season, the Railers sit one point ahead of the Lions for fifth place in the North Division. Worcester trails the Reading Royals by six points for fourth place, with all three teams having played 54 games. Of Worcester’s 18 remaining games, five come against Reading, three each against Maine Mariners, Adirondack Thunder, and Greensboro Gargoyles, and one more against the Norfolk Admirals.

Around the North Division, the Greensboro Gargoyles nearly shutout the Reading Royals 6-2 on Sunday afternoon, Reading scored twice in the closing 1:10 on the power play. The Maine Mariners forced overtime and beat the Adirondack Thunder for their tenth straight win, 4-3. Maine hosts Adirondack for a school day game on Tuesday. Wheeling hosts Reading on Wednesday night.

In the AHL, The Bridgeport Islanders beat the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Sunday afternoon. Henrik Tikkanen earned his tenth win of the season, while Gleb Veremyev scored their second goal. Daylan Kuefler and Cam Berg each had an assist. The Islanders head to Charlotte for the first of back-to-back games against the Checkers on Friday.

The Railers head back to Worcester to host the Norfolk Admirals for the last time this season for a puck drop at 7:05 on Wednesday night.

Railers alum Ken Appleby was in net for one of the longest shootouts in ECHL history on Sunday afternoon. He made 18 stops in 20 rounds. The longest shootouts in league history have been 21 rounds, and that has happened twice. It was the fourth time in league history where a shootout has gone 20 rounds or longer and the fifth time in NHL, AHL or ECHL history where a game has gone into the 20th round of a shootout.
