Game Story

Trois-Rivieres, QC — The Worcester Railers rallied to force overtime and emerged victorious in a 4-3 shootout win over the Trois-Rivières Lions on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Bullion delivered a strong performance with 36 saves, earning his 11th win of the season. The 39 shots he faced were the most in his last 14 appearances, surpassing a previous high against Maine in December. Hunter Jones stopped 30 shots for the Lions and holds a 2-0-2-1 record against Worcester this season, with all three of Worcester’s wins over Trois-Rivières coming against him. Cole Donhauser, Matt DeMelis, and Matt Kopperud found the back of the net for the Railers, while Anthony Beauregard and Nicolas Guay scored for Trois-Rivières, with Beauregard netting two.

The first period remained scoreless, with Worcester outshooting Trois-Rivières 9-6. The Railers successfully killed off two penalties—Matt Kopperud for tripping and Tyler Kobryn for holding—while earning one power-play opportunity when Morgan Adams-Moisan was called for tripping.

Worcester struck first in the second period when Cole Donhauser buried his own rebound between his legs at 10:54. The Lions responded with three consecutive goals. Anthony Beauregard tied the game on an odd bounce off a shot from Jacob Paquette. Nicolas Guay then put the Lions ahead, capitalizing on a rush into the Railers’ zone and finishing a pass from Chris Jandric near the left faceoff circle. Beauregard struck again just before the buzzer, extending the Lions’ lead to 3-1 heading into the third.

The Railers wasted no time mounting a comeback. Just over a minute into the third, Matt DeMelis found the net, lifting a shot over Hunter Jones off a setup from JD Dudek. Moments later, Matt Kopperud tied the game, scoring just four seconds into a power play directly off a faceoff.

In overtime, Worcester successfully killed off an early penalty following an Anthony Callin high stick, with Bullion making six saves. The Railers later had a power play of their own but couldn’t convert, sending the game to a shootout.

Connor Welsh sealed the win for Worcester, scoring in the second round of the shootout—his third of the season. Bullion was perfect in net, stopping all three shootout attempts to secure the victory.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Matthew Kopperud (Worcester) – 1 goal
  2. Anthony Beauregard (Trois-Rivieres) – 2 goals, +1
  3. Nicolas Guay (Trois-Rivieres) – 1 goal

Later in the day on Saturday, the Reading Royals beat the Maine Mariners 4-1. They remain tied with Worcester with 60 points for fourth in the North Division. The Wheeling Nailers beat the Adirondack Thunder 6-4, and the Norfolk Admirals beat the Florida Everblades 3-2 in overtime. Wheeling and Adirondack face-off again Sunday afternoon for the only other North Division action.

The Bridgeport Islanders fell 3-2 in overtime to the Toronto Marlies on Saturday night. The Islanders have lost seven straight (0-5-1-1). Henrik Tikkanen made 27 saves in his 24th appearance of the season. Jack Randl and Justin Gill were in the line-up. The Islanders host the Springfield Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon.

The Railers and Lions wrap up the weekend series Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
