Game Story

Norfolk, VA — The Worcester Railers improved to a 2-2 record with a win over the Norfolk Admirals on Friday night.

Tristan Lennox earned his first professional win, stopping all but one of Norfolk’s 20 shots on goal. Norfolk’s Yaniv Perets stopped 33 of 37 shots made by Worcester. 37 is the Railers’ new season high for shots on goal. The Railers set a new season record with 37 shots on goal. Railers goals were scored by Ashton Calder, Adam Goodsir, Jake Pivonka, and Blade Jenkins. Jenkins has registered at least one point in every game this season, accumulating a total of 1 goal and 3 assists. While not flawless, the Railers played their most complete 60-minute game since the season opener. Both teams converted on one of their five power play opportunities during Friday’s match.

At 13:21 in the first period, the Norfolk Admirals took the early lead when Justin Young seized the opportunity during a 5-on-3 advantage, with Zach White and Ryan Verrier serving penalties for Worcester. Six minutes later, Ashton Calder leveled the score by nudging the loose puck into the net from the front.

The Railers dominated offensively in the second period, building on the momentum from Calder’s goal. They outshot Norfolk 15-2 in this period, shifting the shot totals to 22-11 in favor of Worcester. Adam Goodsir found the back of the net, giving Worcester their first lead since the opening night. Goodsir initially had a scoring opportunity, and the puck ended up in the net as Admirals’ skater Dominick Fensore inadvertently redirected it into his own goal, ultimately becoming the game-winning goal. This marked the second instance this week where a Norfolk player sent a puck into their own net.

Jake Pivonka scored on the backhand at 1:12 to make it 3-1. Pivonka’s goal came during a 4-on-4 situation, with Simon Kubicek serving a roughing penalty from the end of the second period and Worcester’s Quinn Ryan in the penalty box for a tripping infraction that had occurred 22 seconds earlier. Blade Jenkins scored his first goal of the season, to make the game 4-1, slipping the puck past Yaniv Perets amidst a chaotic scramble in front of the net.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Ashton Calder (Worcester) – 1 goal, 1 assist, +2
  2. Tristan Lennox (Worcester) – win, 19 saves, 0.950 SV%
  3. Justin Young (Norfolk) – 1 goal

With a day-off Saturday, the Admirals and Railers will conclude their series on Sunday at 3:05 p.m.
