Game Story

Norfolk, VA — The Worcester Railers took their first road trip of the season to Norfolk to take on the Admirals for the first of three meetings this week, eventually falling 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Henrik Tikkanen made his second start of the season, allowing five goals on 21 shots. Thomas Milic picked up his first career win and the Admiral’s first win of the season. Thomas Caron, Ryan Foss, Justin Young, Mathieu Roy, and Griffin Mendel each tallied a goal for the Admirals. Keeghan Howdeshell and Zach White scored goals for Worcester. Blade Jenkins extended his season point streak to three games with an assist.

Wednesday’s game stresses the differences in playing a 60-minute game, which neither the Railers or Admirals played. The Admirals rode the momentum of a three-goal first period and waited for Worcester to wake up in the second and third period. The Railers played in the same slumber that resulted in Sunday afternoon’s loss.

The Railers were chasing the Admrials after a 3-1 score to end the first period. Thomas Caron scored at the 1:05 mark on a backhand shot. Zach White scored six minutes later to tie the game back up, beating icing and getting a quick shot outside the right circle. Momentum would continue in the Admirals favor with Ryan Foss scoring seconds after Jake Schultz exited the box for a cross-checking call. The Admirals would score again on their third power play, bringing the game to 3-1 after twenty minutes, outshooting Worcester 11-4.

Norfolk brought the game to 4-1, on a shot that bounced off the skate of Admirals forward Mathieu Roy at 5:15 in the period. Artyom Kulakov fought Mark Liwiski after Liwiski cross-checked him with no penalty call, adding to everything that happened in the period without a Railers goal. The Railers outshot Norfolk 16-3 in the period.

Griffen Mendel scored on a dump-in from the blue line at 4:54 where the Railers lost track of the puck, showing that without even trying, the Admirals were the better of the two teams Wednesday. Keeghan Howdeshell scored on the lone power play of the third, bringing the game to 5-2 which would eventually be the final score.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Thomas Milic (Norfolk) – win, 25 saves, 0.926 SV%
  2. Ryan Foss (Norfolk) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Mathieu Roy (Norfolk) – 1 goal, 1 assist

With the day off in between games, the Railers and Norfolk Admirals return to the Norfolk Scope at 7:05 on Friday.
