Game Story
Norfolk, VA — In a game that took two days to complete, the Worcester Railers fell 7-3 to the Norfolk Admirals in the second of two games at the Norfolk Scope this weekend.
After facing delays due to Zamboni and ice issues on Saturday night, the Railers and Admirals resumed their game the following day for a Sunday matinee. The goalies for Worcester and Norfolk remained the same, with Brent Moran and Tomas Vomacka respectively. However, Moran was briefly replaced by Ken Appleby for less than five minutes after Norfolk’s fifth goal in the second period, before returning to the net. The Admirals’ goals from Saturday by Danny Katic and Darren McCormick were supplemented by additional goals from Brian Bowen, Griffen Lunn, Stepan Timofeyev, and two goals from Todd Burgess. Worcester’s Quinn Ryan also contributed two goals, with a goal from Anthony Repaci sandwiched in between, all scored during the second period. Repaci’s point streak extended to ten games (8-7-15) along with a four-game goal streak, while Ryan (3-1-4) began his own point streak and Brent Beaudoin extended his point streak to five games (2-8-10).
The game resumed on Sunday at 2 p.m., and unfortunately, the Railers’ early goal woes continued as Brian Bowen, a Railers alum, scored on a rebound just one minute into the period, making the score 3-0. Todd Burgess followed up with a power-play goal just a minute and a half later, and Griffin Lunn quickly added another goal, bringing the score to 5-0 before the five-minute mark. Brent Moran was replaced by Ken Appleby after the fifth goal, but Appleby faced only three shots before Moran returned to the game. At 5:21, Quinn Ryan scored the Railers’ first goal by tapping in a puck that had bounced out of the left corner, beating Tomas Vomacka’s glove side and bringing the score to 5-1. Anthony Repaci scored the Railers’ second goal of the period just under 30 seconds into a power play with a one-timer. Ryan then scored his second goal of the game, stretching across Vomacka’s crease and over his pads at 12:40. The Railers ended the period with a couple of chances but fell short
The Railers had the same two-goal deficit at the start of the third period as they did at the beginning of the second. Although they had the potential to make a comeback, Chris Ordoobadi’s nerves got the better of him at the 6:03 mark, and he initiated a full-on attack on Nico Blachman, attempting to start a fight, but Blachman refused to engage. Blachman had caused trouble between the two teams, and Ordoobadi’s actions led to him being assessed a minor for instigating, a fighting major, and a game misconduct, resulting in the Railers being down a man for the rest of the game. As a result, the Railers were shorthanded for five minutes. Railers would go on to kill off the penalty, but Norfolk would score a minute later at 12:09 and an empty net goal at 17:01.
Nico Blachman’s antics would continue in the closing minute exchanging words with goaltender Brent Moran leading to fisticuffs between all players on the ice. Blachman would go one-on-one with Bobby Butler, before being escorted off the ice, where he proceeded to remove his jersey and pads at center ice. After the altercation, Railers head coach Jordan Lavallee-Smotherman and Admirals’ head coach Jeff Carr exchanged heated words between the glass. The clock ran out, and the Admirals secured their first and only regulation win over the Railers in the last game of the season between the two teams.
The three stars of the game were:
- Eric Williams (Norfolk) – 4 assists
- Todd Burgess (Norfolk) – 2 goals, 1 assist
- Quinn Ryan (Worcester) – 2 goals
The road trip continues on Wednesday with the Railers traveling to South Carolina to take on the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at 7:05 p.m.
