Game Story

Norfolk, VA — Following Zamboni and ice issues, the Worcester Railers and Norfolk Admirals game scheduled for February 18, 2023, was postponed after just one period of play.

Danny Katic and Darren McCormick were the lone goal scorers through twenty minutes played. Brent Moran had his second start in back-to-back nights, having six saves in the first period. Tomas Vomacka also had his second straight start, stopping all eleven shots made by Worcester.

After just one period, the Norfolk Admirals had a 2-0 lead. Danny Katic scored the opening goal at the 36 mark, assisted by Nico Blachman and Eric Williams. They’d score again late in the period following a turnover turned breakaway at 17:53, where Darren McCormick picked up the puck from Brent Beaudoin, leading him one-on-one with Brent Moran to give the Admirals the comfortable 2-0 lead. Norfolk outshot Worcester 11-8 in the frame.

The game was delayed following ice quality issues following the first intermission. The Admiral’s ice crew was down to just one Zamboni following a malfunction at the Norfolk Scope on Saturday morning. As teams came out prepared for the second period, the period never took off and teams were sent back to their locker rooms as the game was suspended. At 7:40, an hour after the first period ended and roughly a half hour after the second period was anticipated to play, the game was postponed.

It was the second time the Norfolk Scope had ice issues this season, ironically that happened while the Railers were there in November. That game had been suspended but resumed play after an hour-long delay.

Despite the early puck drop, this game was the latest game played in the North Division on Saturday. Trois-Rivieres beat the Adirondack Thunder 6-5 in a game that went into Overtime. Reading beat Newfoundland 5-2 at home. Maine is beating Atlanta 6-2 after the Railers game was postponed.

Update: Per the ECHL, this game will be continued on Sunday at 2 p.m., the remainder of this game will be closed to the public due to a lack of staffing.
