Game Story

St. John’s , NL — The Worcester Railers wrapped up a three-game series against the Newfoundland Growlers on Sunday afternoon, securing a 2-1 overtime win and a three-point run as they make their way back to Worcester.

Tristan Lennox marked his fifth appearance in the season and second in the series following the Railers’ Friday loss. Luke Cavallin, making his second consecutive start after a stellar 33-save shutout on Friday night, showcased exceptional goaltending alongside Lennox on Sunday. Both goaltenders earned stars of the game nods, with Cavallin making 41 saves and Lennox making 27.

Trevor Cosgrove notched his first goal of the season, while Ashton Calder added his team-leading sixth. Zach O’Brien scored the lone goal for the Growlers in his return to the club after starting the season overseas. Zach White and Zach O’Brien led their respective teams with six shots on goal.

Trevor Cosgrove opened the scoring for Worcester with a slick individual effort to give eight minutes into the contest to give the Railers a 1-0 lead after the first period. Cosgrove beat Cavallin glove side on a shot from the right circle at 8:31 to give the Railers the initial lead of the game. Zach White fought former Railers Josh Victor 26-seconds after Cosgrove’s goal for both of their first fighting majors of the season. Railers held a 1-0 lead despite being outshot 13-10 in the frame.

Zach O’Brien capitalized a minute into a Railers penalty with Anthony Callin sitting in the box for a holding call to tie the game at 1. Joe Masonius had the initial shot on goal, which had many of the people in the arena fooled that they Growlers scored with the horn and lights going off, but the puck hit the crossbar and did not go in. That really wouldn’t matter as play continued anyway and O’Brien tapped in the rebound. Zach White would be denied on the Railers first penalty shot of the season at 7:38 in the third period. The game would remain tied through the end of the second period, as well as the third period with the the game heading into overtime.

Heading into overtime, the Railers had a man advantage due to a tripping penalty on Grant Cruikshank that carried over from late in the third period. It didn’t take long for the Railers to make the most of the 4-on-3 advantage. Ashton Calder secured the game-winning goal just 13 seconds into the overtime period. Calder seized an opportunity for a slapshot from the right circle after gaining control of a loose puck, finding the far corner of the goal post and sending it in behind Luke Cavallin.

The three stars of the game were:

  1. Luke Cavallin (Newfoundland) – 41 saves, 0.953 SV%
  2. Ashton Calder (Worcester) – 1 goal
  3. Tristan Lennox (Worcester) – win, 27 saves, 0.964 SV%

The Trois-Rivières Lions secured their ninth win of the season by defeating the Adirondack Thunder 3-2 in the only other North division matchup of the day. This marked the Railers’ only visit to Newfoundland for the regular season this season, with the Growlers scheduled to visit Worcester during the last week of March.

The Railers return to Worcester for the first 3-in-3 weekend of the season, kicking off Friday night at 7 p.m. against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
