Game Story

Manchester, NH — The Worcester Railers closed out their season-long seven-game road trip on Wednesday night against the Manchester Monarchs.

Sam Kurker broke the scoreless tie at 9:27, finding a rebound from the left circle which found it’s way just wide of Mitch Gillam’s pads and into the far corner of the net. The opening period was mostly for Manchester’s taking with Worcester having just three shots on goal with under five minutes left. Dylan Willick served his first minor penalty at 11:35, which was promptly killed off. Nick Sorkin tied things back up at 17:01, deflecting a shot from Robert Powers for his tenth goal of the season. With the game tied at one, Manchester outshot Worcester 15-11.

There was some controversy among Monarchs fans on what they believed to be a good goal after the puck bounced from post to post. The lights went off as if it was a goal, but from my view of the shot it did not go in. The play was discussed with the captains and then both of the head coaches. Further review of the footage (which was erroneously shared by the league instead of goal footage) shows the puck did not cross the goal line.

Barry Almeida gave the Railers their first lead of the night with a top-shelf snipe from the left circle at 4:54, a little over a minute into the Railers’ power play which would end up being the only power play goal of the game. Kevin Dufour tied it for Manchester at 10:42, followed up by a tip-in by Matt Gaudreau at 11:34. The last scoring action came at 14:30 with Sam Kurker’s second of the game. Railers and Monarchs were once again tied, this time at three a piece.

Both teams had two penalties in the third period but otherwise not a ton of action to note. Worcester outshot Manchester 15-8 in the period as they headed into just the second overtime (or later) game in the team’s rivalry.

The game got settled at 3:31 in the overtime period with David Quenneville sending a Matt Gaudreau pass top-shelf for the team’s second road win over Manchester this season.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. David Quenneville (Worcester) – GWG
  2. Sam Kurker (Manchester) – 2 goals, assist
  3. Nick Sorkin (Worcester) – goal,  assist

Worcester (24-22-5-4) is one point out from fifth place, held by the Brampton Beast and two points out of fourth, held by the Maine Mariners.

Worcester will host the Adirondack Thunder on Sunday in the first of three straight between the two. Puck drops at 3:05.
