Game Story

Manchester, NH — The Worcester Railers faced the Manchester Monarchs in a battle for fourth place in the North Division on Wednesday.

Evan Buitenhuis got the start for Worcester after being named goaltender of the week for his performances in last week’s games. David Quenneville (3rd), Bo Brauer (4th) scored for Worcester.

David Kolomatis gave Manchester the first lead of the night at 9:10 in the opening period, stealing the puck at center ice for the breakaway, resulting in a shorthanded goal. David Quenneville tied it back up with the same penalty still on the board 45 seconds later. 25 seconds after that, Tony Camaranisi would regain the lead, scoring the game’s first even-strength goal at 10:10.

History would repeat itself in the second period with a shorthanded goal followed by a power play goal. Travis Walsh tapped in a rebound on a 2-on-1 rush to score Manchester’s third game of the night at 2:47. Bo Brauer scored 25 seconds later, bringing the score to 3-2. Before the period was all said and done, Sam Kurker (8th) and Alex Rauter (11th) would score, bringing the Monarchs lead to 5-2.

Dylan Willick picked up his first fight and first pro penalty in a scrap against Joe Masonius at 1:13 in the second period. Willick held his own against Masonius shortly after Masonius gave Ivan Kosorenkov an elbow to the head. With his first penalty coming 55 games into his pro career, it should reflect the clean style of play he brings day in and day out. Both sat for five with Masonius being given an extra two for elbowing.

Travis Walsh extended Manchester’s lead to 6-2 at 10:06 in the third period, followed by Tony Camaranisi’s second of the night at 14:29.

The Three Stars of the Game were:

  1. Sam Kurker
  2. David Kolomatis
  3. Alex Rauter

Worcester Railers (23-22-5-3) fall behind Maine for fifth in the division with their loss and Maine’s 6-4 win over Reading on Wednesday.

The road trip continues on Sunday with the Railers taking on the Maine Mariners at 3 PM.

Notes

  • Railers Injuries: Connor Doherty, Kyle McKenzie, Tommy Panico, Matt Schmalz
  • Railers Scratches: Mike Cornell (suspended), Tommy Kelley, Robert Powers, Alex Vanier
  • Manchester Injuries: Jared Fiegl, Pavel Jenys, Mario Puskarich
  • Manchester Scratches: Danny Tirone, Dexter Dancs
  • Tuesday saw the signings of defensemen Kevin Hart and Ivan Chukarov to fill in the gaps of the fractured blue line. Mike Cornell sat out Wednesday’s game, serving a one-game suspension and Robert Powers was scratched with what is presumed to be a minor injury.
  • Connor Doherty and Matt Schmalz could be returning to action as soon as Sunday. It was reported that they could return for Wednesday’s game but both were still on injured reserve at the time of puck drop. For either to be activated, the team will need to make some transactions – either releasing, trading, or getting a player recalled.
  • In other news, the Binghamton Devils signed Nick Saracino to a full AHL contract on Wednesday after playing in 20 games for the club since December. Saracino played in 27 games for Wheeling earlier in the season, matching his 37 points scored last season with Worcester which helped with being offered the PTO with the Devils. We’ll have to see how many points Nick Sorkin ends up with at the season’s end (currently at 27 in 52 games) to determine who benefited the most from that trade.
